Check the transom for a number. Possibly located on either side of back of the transom near the top.

Is there an emblem or graphic on the sail? That would simplify things immensely. How long is the boat...

Doubt it is a Lightning, it has a cut out for an outboard, Lightnings don't.
Good point, the afterdeck doesn't look quite right. But I've seen Lightnings with motor mounts bolted to them, similar to what's in these pics.

Lightnings were designed to be built out of wood. The bottoms and topsides are flat and they have a hard chine. Plus they're 19 feet long. This is no Lightning.

There are fiberglass Lightnings. From wikipedia:

"The Lightning is a recreational sailboat, initially built with wooden plank construction and, since the early 1960s, of fiberglass with wood trim. "

Yes, there are fiberglass lightnings. However, the original design was built of wood and is hard chined, making it easy to build out of plywood, wood plank, or fiberglass. I've seen boats built of all three materials.

You're splitting hairs here, and that has nothing to do with the OP's question. Yes, it does share some resemeblence a Lightning, but it is not. It looks shorter than 19 feet. Knowing the length would help narrow the field of potential boats.

Yea, it was just my preliminary guess. :)
I though the same thing when I first saw it. When I see that "V" shaped dashboard, I think lightning. I wonder what other boats had that?

Looking back at the photos, that boat looks to be a hard chine with just a minimal radius to soften the chines.
@wfonger can you provide dimensions for the boat?

A Snipe has essentially no freeboard compared to the OP's boat. V-shaped splash rails can be found on Snipes, Lightnings, Blue Jays, Sunfish, Flying Juniors, 420's and lots of others. Comparing splash rails is going to lead to a lot of dead ends. A Snipe has very little sheer curve. The sheer curve of the OP's boat is quite noticeable -- especially towards the bow, where there seems to be substantial flare as well. The design does not appear geared towards one-design racing. The high freeboard and upturned bow (both of which add weight that would be undesirable in a racing craft) would indicate a boat designed to keep the family dry while daysailing. The bench seats that are not flotation tanks would indicate a boat that was possibly built in the late 1960's or early 1970's, before tank seats became popular and before HIN numbers became prevalent. The fact that the OP is apparently in Cortlandt Manor NY might indicate an East Coast builder - somewhere between FL and ME. Without more information from the OP (who has not reposted since his original post last Tuesday) or perhaps someone who is actually familiar with this boat, we are all shooting in the dark.

I am little late with my (irrelevant) reply.
Firstly, in my view this is not a day sailer, but a sailing/racing dinghy.
A day sailer would have a half cabin to store stuff (picnic basket and ice box for white wine).
i reckon that dinghy is a Wayfarer. A very very proven boat.
Capable of a 4000 mile cruise. but it takes a very special skipper tp pull that oof.
