bad steering, need. help

all of a sudden I have lost steering. I have a 1993 Hunter Legend 35.5.
the cables seem loose and I don't know how to tighten them.

Sounds like a pulley may have come off. You will have to look over the entire mechanism to see where the problem is. Very likely you can't just tighten those cables.

the pull did not come off. it looks like the cable stretched. The cables move when I turn the wheel but don't always keep tight.
I need to know how to tighten the cables

cables wrap around quadrant on top of the rudder post typically, and there are eye bolts to adjust tension.

just follow the cables and this should lead you to the problem.

cables should be inspected regularly, and lubricated. make sure the movement of the cables and quadrant is not hampered by anything in the way. if they were loose they could come off the quadrant.

Different boat, but on my O’Day, the cables go around the quadrant, and have an eye at the end. Then the eye is secured on a long bolt on the quadrant.

These may give you a little bit of an idea where to look.

Not a Legend nor a 35.5; but, a Hunter with a quadrant non-the-less. This pic shows well over an inch of take up on each of the eye bolts. If that doesn’t solve the problem back off the nuts on the eye bolts, loosen the clamps on the wire rope, shorten the wire rope and then retighten the clamps again. Grease everything up or spray with Boeshield T-9 while you’re at it.
