Thanks all, I am leaning 4 stroke, even though the rest of Mercury 4 strokes have up top a bubble look and this looks more squarish. Darn, I was thinking I could ask seller of sailboat to drop it 2500 for not being 4 stroke, ha.

Yup, I think that it is a Tohatsu. Mercury had Tohatsu make their smaller "portable" outboards..

the 100% way of identifying 2stroke vs 4 stroke... look for an oil dip stick on the side of the engine lower areas. No dip stick = 2 stroke... dip stick = 4 stroke ..

BTW, I really did make popcorn! Ha, ha. Working on my recipe. Orville Redenbaker's, in my 2 qt. saucepan, heat the pan, then heat the oil, drop 3 kernels in and when they pop drop 1/3 cup kernels in and cover; 3 tblsp butter melted, 1/2 tsp Kosher salt.... Almost perfect. :)

A most distinctive characteristic is weigh, a Mercury 9.9 HP 4 stroke engine will weigh around 85 lbs. while the 2 stroke version around 60 lbs. Like others have said, look for an oil filler plug.

I have the 15HP 2-stroke, which weighs 75lb. The 9.9 is 74.5lb. That's for manual start motors.

But yes, the 4-stroke will be a lot heavier!

If you have to add oil to the gas without having to add oil to a separate oil tank, you have a two stroke engine. If you can post the information as to model and serial number off the tag inside the engine housing will tell you for sure which stroke it is. Tohatsu use to build the mercury, Nissan and Mariner engines besides their own brand but only Mercury now besides Tohatsu their own. Former Tohatsu dealer.
