Just returned from a charter in Canada's North Channel. 6 of us charted a Beneteau 473. It is a very nice boat - well built with nice manners, 3 state rooms and ample accommodations for the one week cruise. Our boats are all older and I noticed some short comings of the way the newer boat was set up. I really disliked the combination throttle/shift lever similar to what small power boats have. In forward the lever hung out over the cockpit seat and twice it was accidently hit by the person in the seat changing rpm. I really missed the controls mounted on the pedestal - with a separate one for throttle and another one for reverse/forward. No way for a passenger to accidently hit either control. When charging batteries at anchor I found it a little disconcerting to have to push the button on the control lever to ensure we were in neutral. I was always concerned I didn't get it right and the boat might be in gear. I much prefer a separate shift control where there is no doubt if you are in gear or not.

We went from two control arms on an O’Day 28 to one lever on our Beneteau 37. I grew up and learned entirely on the 28 but personally I found the transition pretty easy. I like that when maneuvering I can do all of the engine control with just one hand, leaving the other hand free for the wheel and thruster control. It also means there’s no risk of shifting above idle. I agree it sounds like bad placement if a guest can accidentally hit the control. Ours is mounted on the pedestal but has a similar problem if a guest tries to raise the folding cockpit table while motoring - that will bring the throttle all the way back quite surprisingly. These things should be better thought out, but designers probably are stuck with some compromises for the space they have to work with.

The control for my 1983 Hunter was like that. It was mounted on the side of the seat and got kicked by passengers quite a few times. But that boat didn’t have a pedestal.

They still make them, marketed as sail boat controls. Much cheaper than the pedestal mount I think:

I have had both. My Hunter 280 had the single lever, and it was OK. My O’Day 322 has separate levers, and I like the independent controls.

@higgs, can I ask the name of the Charter co? And where did you launch from?

Greg
