Reef points

Hi,
Has anyone figured out how far back from the tacks are the reef points for a furling main and jib.
I know you can reef the sail anyway you want but it would be a good starting point if I could mark the sails where you would expect 1st, 2nd, and 3rd reef points.
Thanks,
Al

I don’t have exact measurements but our main is marked about 12 or 18 inches behind the tack. With that the idea is to reef at points that are between the vertical battens, not putting the battens right at the mast slot. Our jib has two bands, maybe 20 inches or so apart?

I thought one of the advantages of a furling mainsail was the flexibility of setting the reef points anywhere. You just crank it in or out until the boat is balanced.

My friends have furling main sails, and I would guess 12-18 inches as @Davidasailor26 suggested.

On my new job, I think about 12 inches between reef marks.

The sailmaker usually marks the reef points. Look for a tape or other marking along the foot of the sail. On @Davidasailor26's photo these are the short black stripes on the foot of his main and jib.

It is…infinitely,adjustable.

But the marks give you an idea where you have turn sail reefed.
