I just re- stepped the mast and am kicking myself for not handling the boom.
Outhaul has no purchase as the shive at the gooseneck is frozen, so I took it a part... :-(
Need a source for a new shive as I had to drill and chisel it our of the boom endcap.

Looks like shive is a composite... I don't know. What is the best replacement?

Any one deal with this before? 1980 CAT 30 Hull 1681.

wow this is great. What does it take to go loose foot. I was told it was not worth it.

I sailed my bolt rope footed main sail for years with the foot loose. just don't put the rope into the boom and it is loose footed. The bolt rope is not needed and you will have much better control of the shape of your existing sail by setting it with a loose foot.

You can find parts and advice from Catalina customer service. Thei contact info is on their website. www.catalinayachts.com

If you want to try a loose foot conversion to your mainsail, don't insert the foot's bolt rope into the boom. Most of the strain is at the corners, head, tack and clew, of the mainsail so you won't be giving up any strength, but to be on the save side, tie the clew to the boom with a piece of dacron strapping. Not too tight, you want the sail's clew to be able to slide.. You can take your existing sail to a loft and have them analyze it and suggest changes. I guarantee you they will recommend going loose foot. It makes trimming your mainsail much easier, the outhaul will become one of your most important controls.

To be clear, for loose footing the main, you put the clew slug into the boom groove to hold the clew to the end of the boom but do not instert the rope into the groove.
