Do You Recognize This Anchor?

I'm thinking of buying this used anchor as a spare/backup for my boat. It's 15 lb.

  1. Anyone know the maker?
  2. what is that long slot for?
  3. do you you think this will hold my 38', 16,000 lb. displacement boat?

Thanks,

Are you sure it is 15 lbs? That does not seem nearly big enough to hold a 38 foot, 16,000 lb sailboat. Maybe it is 15 kg or about 33 lbs If it is only 15 lbs I think I'd pass on it.

Yea, thanks, since I posted I went back and re-read the ad, I need 15 kg., at least. My Rocna primary anchor is 15 kg., and even that is marginal according to Rocna. 15 lb. won't do it. I'm going to check with the seller on that, too.

If it is 15 kg, not 15 lbs, and is your "backup anchor" that might be a decent choice. What is your primary anchor? Where are you planning on storing it on the boat?

Primary is a 15 kg. Rocna, on the bow roller.

A spare I would try to keep in the bow chain locker, if it doesn't fit or work there, then in a cockpit locker.

See that slot? That anchor is mostly made for fishermen who fish around rocks. The slot attachment allows the shackle to slide down towards the flukes and when pulled forward the anchor unhooks from any rocks it might be caught on. Should you buy that anchor be sure to attach your shackle to the hole and not the slot.

Thank you, @Bob S it certainly does! So, what's your take on a Manson Supreme?

I checked their website and they recommend the 35 lb. version for my boat's length and displacement.

I had it on my Catalina 30, it’s one of the original new generation anchors. It’s a solid anchor. If you search this site you’ll see Rodd had a good opinion of it. Only dragged once in 7 seasons. Anchored overnight outside Cuttyhunk Known for poor holding, eel grass. Woke up to a squall. No anchor would have held.

Yes, a Manson Supreme. I had one for 10 years. Very good NG anchor. No one uses the slot and they'd have been better not to include it; probably the marketing department's idea. But 15 pounds is too small. I had a 35-pound anchor on a 34'-foot cat, and I think that was about right.

Hi neighbor! I moved to New Bedford in August, but I still keep the boat at Tripp's in Westport.

That's kinda scary to drag like that. I found my Bruce clone and the Rocna will dig into that grass in Cuttyhunk, and come up with a lot of mud, too, but the Danforth just skimmed across the top and didn't set.

I wouldn't count on keeping any heavy anchor in the bow chain locker unless it is "divided" to keep the anchor away from the chain in the locker. Otherwise if you have to deploy primary in a hurry it may interfer with the chain running free. Ask me about having to deploy in a hurry. :yikes: I am not familiar with a Tartan 3800 and the configuration of anchor locker.

That's an excellent point, and one that I will pay attention to. My C36 had a molded-in feature that allowed one to hang a Danforth in the locker in a non-interfering way with an anchor on the roller. I can't recall offhand if the Tartan has such a provision. Else I'll just keep a spare in the cockpit locker.

Do you have a stern rail? Although this anchor is a bit small for your boat, it might make a nice "lunch hook" that you can drop from the sern as you enter a cove. I had this set up on my Hunter 26. The rode ran along the outside of the stanchions to the bow eye.... It worked very well... I would come into the cove at about 2 kts and drop the hook over the stern... when it dug in, the boat would swing around. I just used a piece of PVC pipe wired to the stern rail with large hose clamps.

Thanks, but I'm trying to minimize the things hanging off the stern! I prefer the "yachty" look and feel to the utilitarian/cruising look and feel.

Couldn't see a thing. Used my cell/Navionics to see what direction I was moving. Thankfully away from any danger. Don't think it lasted more then 5 minutes. Had the engine running trying to steer into the wind but kept getting blown off. Next morning when I retrieved it it was a solid ball of mud and grass. I agree the anchor is too small, I've got a 65# Mantus hanging off my bow. Isn't cruising fun!

Welcome to NB. I saw your posts last year, beautiful home you bought. You'll have to bring your boat over to Cisco Brewery. They did a great job and you can anchor or pick up one of their moorings. I'm sure we'll be heading to Westport, can't beat Horseneck Beach. When I do we'll dinghy by to say hi.

Please do!

I don't know that I'd be sailing to Cisco, it's kinda far ro sail for a beer. :) I've been there a few times by car, it can be fun.
