Only time, and the flipping of a few coins will tell which is easier (and cheaper).
True! I guess I would give it a year of spot testing and then reevaluate. But that is me... I like working on boats but I like sailing more.

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to provide an update on my progress. I have recently purchased some Interlux Y2000 and additional bottom paint. My plan is to grind down all of the rusted areas, which includes most of the keel, apply the Interlux, and then repaint.

However, I am uncertain whether I need to layer some epoxy on top of the Interlux after application. If anyone has any insight or experience with this, I would greatly appreciate your advice.

I think the order is epoxy on bare metal, several layers of Y2000(?), and then bottom paint. You don't need to re-coat the barrier coat with epoxy before the bottom paint. And I think you shouldn't.
What does Interlux say? That is what's important. It's a lot of labor so I think you should follow the instructions as closely as possible.

Interlux 2000 is a two part epoxy. Main thing is grind/sand to bare shiny metal and apply 2000 immediately (same day). I applied two coats, hot coating between coats. Used epoxy fairing compound where necessary between coats two and three. Applied third coat of 2000 after fairing and light sanding. Placed two applications of anti fouling paint. Main thing is to apply first coat of 2000 before metal has an opportunity to start oxidizing.

On bare metal, use a primer that contains zinc chromate first
Thank you for sharing this! I started implementing these steps, and they’ve helped tremendously.

UPDATE: I apologize for digging up an old thread. After a couple of years, this challenge has remained consistent. Each year, I’ve had to grind off the rust and reapply an anti-rust primer, followed by two coats of Interlux 2000 and then 2–3 coats of antifouling paint. While the rust is persistent and continues to return, it’s been in smaller quantities each year.

That said, this forum has been invaluable for the feedback and advice I’ve received. Thank you all for your help!
