Catalina 310 Icebox Drain

The bilge of our 2004 Catalina 310, ordinarily dry as a bone, has begun to have more and more water in it each time we get out to the boat. It turns out that our 20 year old freshwater system has several small leaks. While tracking down freshwater system leaks, I discovered that the top of the drain fitting in the icebox had separated from the body of the fitting. The drain fitting in the icebox is a straight thru hull with ¾ inch barb fitting and is plumbed into the galley sink drain line via a tee. This plumbing is hidden under the bottom panel of the galley sink cabinet. I am ashamed to say that we have had the boat for almost six years now and I had never noticed it was plumbed into the sink drain.

We use the icebox for dry storage (water, beer, soda etc.) and after finding the broken fitting I removed the stored items from the icebox so that I could begin the process of repairing the drain. There, in the very bottom of the icebox was a hard cider that had sloughed off its cap and spilled the contents into the bottom of the space. That certainly explains that weird brownish liquid we found in the bilge not long ago. Cider apparently has exceptional adhesive qualities as one of our ice cube trays if firmly cemented into place.

I found a replacement fitting easily enough, but the challenge will be fitting it back to the icebox and reconnecting the drain line. There is not a lot of room (practically none) under the galley sink to reach the underside of the icebox to attach the fitting and hose. It will no doubt require two sets of hands and someone will have to endure fiberglass rash and galley cabinet bruising. Has anyone else here had a similar issue and maybe discovered a trick? Thanks.

Interesting, when you refer to ‘ice box’ , I assume it is the dry storage section next to the refrigerator. Our 2001 does not have a drain for this compartment.
Mine is not insulated, so I never thought of using it as an ice box.
Maybe there were changes over the years, or a previous owner add-on.
Cheers

There are previous threads about the "icebox" drain issue. The consensus seems to be that these are owner installed mods. My 2003 C310 had no drain, and was used exclusively for dry storage.

I remember. You and I conversed about it before. I was hoping that some of the owners with the mod had experience in the repair. I am hoping to get to it this week. Others have mentioned the box holds ice for several days. I will post here if I find insulation. Thanks!

Our 310 (early 2000) has no drain. if you can find a fitting with a nut on the inside of the (ice)box, you can pre mount the hose on the fitting and secure it from inside the ice box. a lot better than from the underside.....

Great idea. I have unfortunately already gotten a thru hull that has the nut fitted from underneath. If I can't get to it though, this may be another way to do it. In truth, we have never used it for anything other than dry storage. Ah well.

I did finally make it back out to the boat to put this project to bed. There was no insulation around the dry/ice box. The new fitting was easy enough to install and reach after removing the bottom panel under the galley sink. With that panel out I was able to see that when this project was done a check valve was installed in the dry/ice box drain line. There was absolutely no way that any melted ice water from the box would be able to overcome the check valve spring to drain. So, I decided to just replace the galley sink drain hose and omit the tee and dry/ice box storage drain hose. As I mentioned before, we have never used it as an ice box and likely never will.
