Mk III aft locker hatch question

Hi All

Just purchased a 30 Mk III. Spending a little time rooting around, cleaning out the junk and familiarizing myself with some of the basics. Going to have a lot of questions I am sure.

First one - both rear locker lids (farthest aft port and starboard) foul the pushpit stainless rail to the point where they can't be open all the way - seemed like maybe around 45 degrees. This seemed fairly dumb. I have the pushpit with the seats in the outboard corners.

Is this right? Has anybody bothered to try and find a fix? It seems like it makes full access to the lockers kind of a pain.

Perhaps posting a picture of your issue might help, since it seems to be a new one. Looking at YouTube pictures of factory pushpit/seat installations doesn't really show the problem. Thx

Yes, a photo of the issue would help. I've been on a few MkIIIs and cannot visualize what the issue is. If you had said the rear stays fouled the opening of the lockers, I can see that. Due to the open transom the stays were pushed far into the corners, fouling the perch seats IMHO.
On my 93 MkII with walk thru transom they don't open enough to stay open on their own but close.

BTW, knowing the year would also help. Some consider my 93 a MkIII due to the features it has. When I asked CTY whether it was a II or III they said to go by sailboatdata.com.

Ward have you considered using a Gas Strut to hold the lazarett hatch up. They come in a variety of sizes and should be relatively easy to configure.

Thanks for the replies. The boat is in a different state state so it will be a while before I can get pics. The problem is that the hatch cover hits the pushpit SS tubing at about 45 degrees open, so it can't open any farther. To be as clear as possible, this would be the propane locker to port and the matching general purpose locker to starboard on either side of the helm station seat.

Boat is a 1994 - was listed as a Mk III - other than that I have no particular knowledge.

The defining difference between a true mk3 and a late mk2 is the sugar scoop transom. The late mk2's have a walk-thru transom but not the sugar scoop. I have no direct experience with Mk3's so this is purely speculative. On my Mk2, the lazarette lid is attached with hinges that allow full removal of the cover. When I want a lot of access, I lift the lid partially and then slide it to port and the hinges come apart and allow the hatch to be placed elsewhere.

Welcome to the family. There are a bunch of C30 owners around. I have owned my 88 C30 tr/bs for 25-years and enjoyed every one. It sounds like you may be doing this but will state the (to me) obvious anyway. On each new to me boat, the first thing I did was to remove everything that was not attached and done a deep clean of every locker and hidden space. I then went through every piece of inherited gear to decide what I wanted to clean and return to the boat immediately and where it would suit me best. The rest went home for further processing to give me time to decide what should be disposed of and what should be returned to the boat.

Exactly what I am doing. Unfortunately the boat is a 4 hour drive away and it is pretty cold here in New England right now - so am a little limited.

I am sort of doing triage to get the boat in shape for a trip up the coast from CT to ME. I think the big projects will start next fall and continue forever.

I did not think to check the hinges. That would solve the issue. Will check next time I am there.

This is my 2001 C30 MK.III. As you can see it opens. There are the factory perch seats behind my buddy who is loosening the pushpit to remove and have it straightened a bit. (It was pushed just enough to impede the easy operation of the swim ladder. Not enough to notice when I was buying it.) The other side opens the same way.

Hi,
I have a '97 MKIII and was wondering if you might be familiar with a propane tank mount in the locker you are occupying in the photo. I have a transom radar pole mount whose u-bolt nuts are inside the transom at that locker. I need to access those bolts to replace the mounting block, but cannot figure how to get the propane insert to come off. Since it is winter and my boat is about a 45 drive away, I don't have the luxury to get to it for some time. Thanks for all suggestions.

Have you ever removed the insert? If so, is it just the 4 small screws, or am I in for a surprise?
It looks like just the four screws AND A LOT OF 3M 5200 or maybe 4000. I think you may break things trying to get it apart.

If it is bonded with 5200 or even 4200 you can get it loose with little trouble by using Debond Marine Formula.
It doesn't dissolve the adhesive. Instead it makes it let go of whatever it is stuck to. After trying it once, I will never remove anything stuck with adhesive using any other method.
