So this guy has been anchored here for three days … I’m guessing he has a very big anchor

Looks like chain rode, and the boat is laying perpendicular to the wind. I’m guessing there’s current running perpendicular or opposite the wind, and the chain is just laying piled up on the bottom under his bow. (At least I hope that’s the case for the sake of his boat any anyone downwind of him when the wind picks up later this week.)

Where is “here”? If waiting out Nicole I’d look for a sheltered spot. The anchor in view on the bow looks tiny for that size boat. Hopefully they have a much bigger primary.
Judging by the tannin mustache at the bow I’m assuming they came via the ICW.

This is the Ashley river. Tide was coming in so he turned into the tide. I have seen him swing three times and his rode was straight down each time.

If I were you, I'd take a close look at where my boat was anchored w.r.t. that boat and make sure I wasn't located in a potential down-drag vector...

Right! So how does a person who is otherwise to lazy or ill equipped to master the things they have, acquire enough wealth to own something like that?

I've seen the guy sitting out on the top deck sipping a beverage so it sure seems like a pleasure craft situation. He could be a liveaboard but you would think he would understand his systems better if he was. Friday he motored up the Ashely and anchored in about 12' of water here...

It is not an anchorage and I've never seen any other boats overnight here. It is usually cluttered with crab pots.

A question I have asked for many decades.... when you find the answer, let me know...

It doesn't take "a very big anchor", it takes a very good anchor and the proper rode. A 140# anchor on 3/8ths chain is just plain a waste of money. At that anchor weight one should be using 5/8 chain and a 1.5" snub.
In an instance of emergency, my Rocna on 1/2" chain held my 77k# boat in a 25 knot wind @ 1.5:1. Didn't stay that way, after the problem was ironed out, but had it not set at that scope, I'd probably have done many thousands of dollars to the big cats anchored astern of me.
