Can anyone provide insight into the cost of an overhaul for a Universal 25? Has anyone removed the engine and completed an overhaul themselves? Was it difficult? I'm trying to run a cost/benefit on keeping my C30 which needs an overhaul or selling/upgrading to a slightly larger boat. The long pole in the tent is the engine overhaul or potential remanufacture. Thanks for you help?

Really depends on what is actually wrong with the engine. If it is just bearings, seals, piston rings and a valve job, probably around less than $1000 (400-500 if you do it yourself) .. I think that it is a marinized Kubota engine, so the basic parts can be had from a Kubota tractor parts supplier. Why is he overhaul necessary?

Is it top end troubles, lower end, low oil pressure, smoking, etc.? Or, does it just need "refurbishment," due to years of lack or attention, or perhaps corrosion?
I had an M25 in a C36 for 17 years. One year I took the engine home because it had broken a couple of output damper bolts. That winter I decarbonized the heads, new head gasket, adjusted the valves, removed all signs of corrosion, painted it, new hoses, new injectors, tweaked several things, new motor mounts, and put it back in. This was not so bad. Worked great.
If you need a real rebuild, like crank bearings, rings, valves, etc., you're probably better off looking to repower with a Beta or some such replacement.
That said, a newer, bigger boat would be nice!

Thanks for the info. I haven’t yet determined what it needs. Open disclosure…my expertise isn’t in diesel mechanics so I need to just take it in. My father is a gear head and needs a mechanical task, so I was going to suggest to him that we work on it together, so I was just inquiring about difficulty. Also, as Stu suggests, perhaps I’m just trying to justify a larger boatThis^^^.
