I'm thinking of renting my 37 ft 1983 sailboat out for a week in Maine. Any advice, suggestions or something to watch out for and maybe contracts I ought to be aware of?

Talk to your insurance company.
Then talk to a lawyer, the coast guard and another insurance company about their experiences with owners renting their boats out in Maine. You are interested in hearing about real experiences, not just what an insurance company will cover or not.

There are companies, like AirBnB that do that. They will have owners forums you can read. Do a thorough job researching. Asking here is just a first step in your prep. You will have a lot at stake.

I would not be very thrilled with renting out our boat. Ours is 2 years old and yours is 37 years old. If you are lucky and get a good renter, then you will be fine. If you get someone who is not careful, the damages etc will be far more than the rent check you get.

Be careful.

How many times have you heard….”ah, well, it is a rental”?

Don’t think I would want to rent out my old girl.

Also, do you need to have the boat inspected and certified to be used as a rental? I think if I use mine as a charted boat (even where I am acting as Captain), the boat is supposed to be inspected by the CG.

This varies by the number of passengers being carried. If the boat is going to carry fewer than 6 paying passengers it is an Uninspected Passenger Vessel is subject to the usual carriage requirements of the USCG and must be substantially built in the US. These are commonly used as fishing charters and small tour boats.

I am unaware of any requirements for bareboat charters other than the required USCG safety equipment and notices.

To be used as a sailing craft or as a floating bedroom in a Marina?

The Marina may have rules...
The risk of loss to an unqualified skipper... The waters off the Maine coast are not always gentle and there are dangers in the water. Will the renter be qualified and accepting of all the risks? What will be the issue if your boat has an Old Part Failure?
