Shipping boat from HI to mainland?

This will be Mid-June 24’ as it gets closer I’ll give more detail. I plan on documenting it through video/writing.

Yikes! Of course Definitely not weather to start a 4-5 week crossing in any boat let alone a 17’ er. I will be looking at the Cali-HI weather June 22’ and 23’ with great interest!
June is the beginning of hurricane season in the Pacific as it is with the Atlantic. While Hawai'i seldom gets struck head on from a hurricane, the tropical storm remnants do frequently pass over or by the islands.

If you want to know the Tropical Storm activity in the Pacific, tune your internet into the JTWC (Joint Typhoon Warning Center - yes, Hurricane's are called Typhoon's when they happen in the Northwestern Pacific Basin).

I am hanging this quote on my feeble man cave wall!
The M17 “Strawanzza” I mentioned earlier sailed out of SoCal and made it to NZ where it was sold. It’s a shame the Captain never wrote of his voyage. I found a little info that health problems of a family member caused his early cancellation.
My main dilemma for SHTF WX planning is using a Sea Anchor Hove-To (Pardey Method) or deploy JSD off stern. Since this should be downwind majority of way I’m thinking JSD. The cockpit will be 1/2 glassed/plywood over with water tight (float chamber-storage) compartments, companion way will NOT be a drop board but a gasketed hatch. Since my testing will be on Lake Erie over the coming two years I’ll try both methods and see how she handles in a gale.
I read Gary Spiess’s “Alone across the Atlantic” recently if your so inclined it’s a great read.
10’ boat @2000# he only carried food that floated for extra buoyancy and used water for part of the ballast. incredible @55 days from VA to England with no AIS/Weather receiving capabilities EPIRB etc. I came into the book thinking it was a lucky stunt but the man was a true seaman.
There is a big difference between Erie and the Pacific, size and depth. While wind can blow quite fiercely across the Great Lakes, Erie's short fetch and shallow depth will tend to build short steep and square waves, whereas the swells in the Pacific may be higher, but the period will be longer and the swells not as steep. The boat will handle differently in those conditions.
If you can sail in bigger water then you will get a better feel for the boat's performance.

I am sorry! One of you fine fellas sent me a good book reading list and I can’t find the email. One of the books was “Little Breeze to the West” M15 from Cali-Hawaii 1982 which I just finished. Michael Mann (22) had no AIS, weather receipt capability, broke his sextant half way there. He used DR with compass and a knot/meter thing to judge his position when he finally saw land he thought it was Hawaii big island and considered continuing west to land at Maui. Luckily he just headed for it and upon arrival found out it was Kauai!!!! The last island in the chain if he missed it next stop was Japan…scary!
Surprisingly the M15 performed very well even in the remnants of a hurricane with 45kt winds. He did ride a warp a couple times which I could not figure out since he said a warp with a sea-anchor? He also said the waves beat the heck out of him a couple times and he didn’t dare look outside cause they were ginormous. The boat rode over them like a duck (sea anchor drogue deployed)
Reading the book gives me hope for a successful journey in the bigger beefier M17.

As much as I’d like to build this up (Think Evel Kenival Snake River Rocket jump) but successful! lol I’ll probably just do it then post a YouTube “documentary style video” about the whole thing. Many have done it in smaller boats I am not breaking new ground.
I really don’t know why but it’s a challenge I’ve thought about since a teen reading about small boat voyages. Watching mountains approaching from stern for days on end is exhilarating and terrifying!
