240 fender location when docking

Obviously a noob question, but where do you all with 240s like to tie on your fenders for docking? The widest part of the boat - right where I always seem to want a fender - doesn't have a stanchion or cleat or other convenient spot. I don't like to tie to the life line because it sags when ungated at the dock. Do you find that the spacing of the two middle stanchions works well enough?

There are some cable stops that can be added to prevent the lifelines from sagging. we use a "fender board" which is nothing but a piece of 2" by 6" of about 4' in length with holes at both ends to hold to hold attaching lines. Fenders will be strung both fore and aft the widest part of the boat where appropriate. The board must be longer than the distance to cover the fenders and the fenders must be fat enough that when the board is placed over them horizontally the board will not touch the widest part of the hull. It is the board that will make contact with the with the pilons at the dock and the fenders will act as shock absorbers.

This is what mine look like. The two center ones are "L" shaped and attached to the dock.

Stores sell long dock fender material that ca be permanently installed. If in a marina, get permission first
