I used to race against a Newport 28. Fast fast boat. I could beat it, but only by a few lengths after over an hour of racing.
The Newport 30 is indeed a slower boat, but albeit not known for any particularly bad habits. I prefer the hull/deck joint design on the Newport, also.
Also, compare the interior layouts. IMHO, C&C was much better at this than Mr Mull.

Well. I question whether it’s fair to lump Corinthian sailboat racing in with the corrupt sports world more generally. Tell me a guy who throws footballs several hours a day for most days of his life up until that time and is paid BIG bucks for doing it doesn’t know when his game ball is under inflated. That had to be the biggest Pinocchio in sports history.:liar: Right up there in magnitude with “I didn’t inhale.”

But on to the point. PHRF ratings are not immutable. In fact, they can be challenged by application in the local PHRF board meetings, etc., and adjusted. The folks who designed, built, and marketed the Newport 28 are long since gone. C&C yachts is out of business. Nobody with any commercial influence or advantage is around to “lobby” for an unfair PHRF rating on a new boat design. Yet, the PHRF rating remains as it has for some time now. So no. It’s not “fixed” IMHO. It’s not an under-inflated football in the hands of a sports “hero” just to arrive first in a few local “cruising class” races.

Hi VS,
Is this your first sailboat purchase? I also assume you hired the surveyor. If so, he should have your interests at heart. The survey should be thorough and concise enough to make a reasonable judgement on the condition of the boat. Therein lies the question and answer as to what your are willing to pay. There is always "what the market will bear", yet the market won't bear a boat that is in poor condition regardless of age. IMHO, $17,000 for a boat of that age?... it better be splash and sail. ( I own and sail a 1974 Newport 30 II...good boat and sails well) But, realize a boat of that age is going to need...
Another question to you is...are you a DIYer? Many repairs can be done very easily. And some can and will be intensive. Materials for maintenance, repairs, and/or upgrades can be costly. Doing the work yourself is a huge savings. There are countless resources available to guide you through most procedures (speaking from experience), even purchasing a boat. Anyway, hope this helps and good luck.

Thank you for all of the input. Case closed, I bought the boat.
Congrates on the new to you boat !!!
Enjoy the boat this season and when you're having that beverage of choice enjoying the boat, think about where you might spend some time and money.

Did your insurance provider insure it at the price you paid vs. the lower market price stated by the surveyor, if you insured it to an agreed value?

I am finding this market to be highly inflated and there are more buyers than boats for sale, therefor the owners are less likely to go down much.
When I bought Skipping Stone it was exactly the opposite, paying a third less than the asking being the norm for a knowledgeable buyer.
However, absolutely the worst place to be is emotionally involved in a boat you don't own yet. Until she is yours she is just an item to be passed on if the price or condition aren't what you wish. Way too many people buy a boat because she pleases their eye, rather than on whether that vessel really suits their needs.

I'm not sure "needs" is a great term here. Who really "needs" a sailboat at all. Why would I buy a boat that doesn't please my eye? We buy boats for our own pleasure, might as well appreciate the beauty in them.

DArcy, by needs I interpreted the use of the boat. How you are going to sail ( day sail, coastal cruising, ocean passages). Are you sailing alone or with a group of friends? These are needs that the boat must fulfill.

I agree that a boat must please the eye as I approach her on the dock.

If boats are works of art then is it not true, Form follows Function?

Ok, that makes sense. Maybe I just got lucky (after a 2 year search) finding a boat that pleases my eye and meets my short handed lake and coastal cruising "needs".

When I was looking for my first big boat, I found a pair of Herreshoff ketches that were about the most beautiful 36 footers I'd ever seen. Sailed like a dream, fast and comfortable. Why didn't I buy one? Headroom below was about 4 feet.
That is what I mean by a boat suiting the "needs" of someone who has decided to buy a boat. As far as ugly goes, as has been pointed out to me numerous times on here, that is really in the beholder's eye, isn't it?
Personally I will forego my idea of lovely; clipper bow and wine glass stern, for a less appealing reverse transom and elliptical stem, if it will sail better and be a more comfortable home.
