Thanks, heading out to a neighbor's for desert. Hopefully he'll oblige, he's a big sports fan he'll understand.

Race was supposed to start an hour ago... nothing posted yet. Should be good when it comes, with 20-25 kts of breeze for them to bounce around in.

I've been watching the race for about an hour. They are having a problem with the video player and it's not available to view at this time. It should be up and running again soon.

Interesting that they have four starts from different lines all at the same time, and then different turning marks for each fleet. Makes for quick work on the RC boat!

one third of the boats out of the race due to damage.
And ALL of these boats would have been in tip top condition.
Amazing isn't it. Are they pushing that hard? Or is that sea just that difficult? Combo of both?

That's a great observation @garymalmgren

p.s. i was looking at the classes in that race - there's a "Cruisers" class - in that class you predict at what time you will cross specific points. You get 20 points if you hit that within 1 hour and 10 points between 1 and 2 hours. That's a very interesting class....

Reading that account of the race makes me realize that I have not one stitch of desire to do that. I've done my share of bashing into waves but I've reached a point where I want to sail with the waves. Sailing on flat water would be even better.
Yes, they push those boats hard but when there are hull failures they are probably at the limit of light building for a race that has seen those conditions and worse over the years.

Reports say the breeze went from about 15 at the afternoon start to 20-25 outside Sydney Heads, and then 40-45 (unforecast) Sunday night, with rain. Steep waves because of the current running against the wind have boats shooting off the tops and falling straight down perhaps 8 or 10 feet. Doing that 500 or so times, with the waves getting bigger as the wind continues, will have repercussions, even in a well-prepared fleet.

The blokes in the photo are the formal business CEO type.
Not like me at all.
I am more laid back and casual.

Here is a photo of me wondering who stole that glass thing with all the letters and numbers on it?
It used to be there in that thing in front of the wheel.

  • It's OK!
  • We still have our compass.
  • The only instrument Columbus had to get him to the New World was his trusty
  • Don't lose that!
  • A gust blows the Compass off the boat in the storm

You're looking at the drink holder attached just forward of the wheel. The compass - with the black compensator balls mounted on it- is cropped off on the left hand side of the photo.
