Replacing the Exhaust Hose - 41DS

One of the items noted on the pre-purchase survey our new-to-us boat was that the wet exhaust hose was cracking and replacement was recommended. I have attached one of the images the surveyor provided showing the cracking.

I've been looking at 3" I.D. marine wet exhaust hose and it appears that there are at least two kinds: hardwall and softwall. For the most part, the hose has a fairly straight run from the output of the muffler (under the aft cabin bunk) to a sweeping bend to starboard, then a sweeping bend upward followed by a sharp bend back down to the through-hull fitting. I'm concerned about the difficulty of effecting the sharp 180* bend. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Advice from someone who has replaced their exhaust hose would be most welcome.

I have a friend who replaced his and used fiberglass elbows at the elbows.

I looked into that and was shocked as how expensive they are - several hundred dollars each.

Yeah he did say they were pricey but at the end of the job he was happy he did it that way! Made the install much easier and cleaner!

The 3" elbows are around $40-$50. Where are you seeing $200? I used Centek and purchased at BoatiD.

If you use this hose which is a duplicate of the OEM on your boat. [mine too]

You will not need elbows.
VETUS Rubber Exhaust Hose, 3" (Sold by the Foot) | West Marine

Specs say it has a Bending radius: 4 5/16"

But if you want elbows made from High Temp Silicone [Better longevity than Fiberglass]...
SHIELDS RUBBER Series 290S 90 Degree Silicone Exhaust Elbow Connectors | West Marine

If you run the straight hose, you avoid the extra double clamping for the elbow.

Which part of the hose is this? Engine to muffler? or muffler to exit. Our hose, after 1500 hrs looks nice and round and smooth, not wavy. I wonder it it has been over heated with no water flow? I had a power boat where the same hose had delaminated inside due to water starvation and Hi heat. Expensive hose.

This is part of the run from the output of the muffler to the through hull. The section from the engine to the input of the muffler generally looks the same but there is very little, if any, cracking.

It might make sense to ping the hose manufacture to see what their opinion is. At some point too many projects makes a boat unfun.........

Is the thruhull below the waterline? My Hunter 280 exhaust was below the waterline….I would be more careful with any hose that is below the waterline…especially if there is no valve to close.

The exhaust through hull is above the waterline - several inches or so. There is a "loop" in the exhaust hose, the top of which is at least 18" above the through hull, to prevent impinging waves from driving water into the muffler/engine.

From your manual...

Maybe wrong manual but it says 2" hose.

Yes, I saw that the manual does say 2". However, the existing exhaust hose is clearly marked as being 3" I.D. This boat does have the optional larger engine so that may be why the exhaust hose is larger.

Replaced mine last year H410. Once you get the old hose out you should probably change the the engine to muffler as it is much easier with the rear hose out. You will be able to bend the hose in the lazarette with a little difficulty. Will help to have an assistant or two feed the hose from the back and twist as necessary, I was thankful to have two . I had removed the divider in the lazarette as it needed to be replaced due to rot which made the job much easier.

After researching this some more, I find that what I have now is series 252 corrugated marine wet exhaust hose in 3" I.D. (i.e. 252-3000). The difference between the series 250 (hard wall) and the series 252 is that the latter is more flexible. Now to find a supplier at a good price. There is an eBay seller that has the series 250 3" I.D. available for about $1.50 per inch. I sent them a message asking if they can get the 252-3000. The brand that they have listed is MPI - the same as is in my boat now.
