Propane storage on H44 Ac

Hello. My 44AC has a vented box in the port cockpit lazarette for house use. Where do others store their bbq tanks? I was thinking of installing a vent in a different cockpit locker although the liner is separated from the actual hull in there and don’t know of a vent fitting that would work. Suggestions appreciated. Thanks

If you are referring to the small (generally green) screw on tanks like for a camp stove here is what I do. I constructed two "propane containers" from Schedule 40 PVC pipe with a glued on cap at the bottom with holes drilled in them for venting. The top has a screw on plug. I can then drop three of the green canisters into the tube and strap to a convenient place topside. Kind of like strapping extra fuel topside in fuel cans that extended cruisers use. I"ll try and get a picture if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the idea. Currently we have a 10lb tank in a milk crate tied to a rear step as received from the PO. The tank will fit in one of the two cockpit lockers just need a way to vent it. Cheers

Placing a Propane tank in a locker is more than just a vent....

You need to affirm that the locker is sealed and can contain the volume of propane in the locker.
  1. You then need to install a sealed vent hole with fixture to the lowest point of the locker.
  2. Attach propane hose to the vent hole fixture.
  3. Secure/seal with proper clamping.
  4. Route the hose directly to the hull below the horizontal where it exits the locker. Install a dedicated thru hull that exits above the water level.
Propane is heavier than air. Any leak (gas release from the tank) will seek the lowest place in the locker. From there it will flow thru the vent and down the hose. No kinks are allowed. Not loops. No water traps. Just a straight path to let the propane flow out of and away from the boat.

Dan & I use the same system except I use a push-on cap instead of screw-on.

The Flame King tanks are refillable by design. With less than $20 of hardware you can refill safely from a 20# tank for 50 cents.
