garmin NMEA 2000 backbone and Ray EV100 wheel pilot

Anyone running Garmin plotter and G-wind with a Raymarine EV100 wheel pilot. I would like to here how and where you transition between the NMEA2000 and Seatalk NG.

I have Garmin 840sx with gwind & depth talking to the ray ev100, On the EV100 there's a connection for the ng that just happens to be the same as Garmin 2k. all I did was spliced the wire for the garmin 2k bus. On this bus I also have the Vesper AIS and all devices are happy and talk to each other.

Did you cut the ends off of the N2K and Seatalk NG drop cords and slice them together? In my setup, I will end up having the control head at one end of my backbone and the compass and brain at the other end. I am hoping that all of the change over can be done in the drops so that I do not need to replace the backbone.

There is not much info on what data can be shared between the two systems. Can the pilot follow a route from the Garmin plotter and steer to wind angle from the G-wind?

The ACU N2k is wired not a plug so all I did was cut the end off the Garmin N2k and wired it with the ACU wiring. Yes all options work Tracking on Plotter and wind. N2k is a standard the only thing is updates, you can update the Garmin stuff but not the Raymarine stuff the other thing you can't do is mix radar.

ACU is wired so my Gamin drop cable with end cut off and appropriate wires into terminal strip. CHECK
p70s. I assume that this has a STng plug so I will need STng / Devicenet drop cord. Correct?
Sensor Core. How is this connected?

Well it is getting serious now because I am ordering the EV100 tomorrow. I think I need to have my N2K backbone in the center with the STng on each end. I have made a (very) rough drawing of what I am thinking. I will need to transition from STng backbone to N2K backbone between the EV sensor and the Garmin GND-10. Then I will transition from N2K on the drop line to the P70s.
Does that look about right?

I don’t see where your second termination resistor goes. It won’t fly without that.

One would go to the left end of the 5-way devise and the other is at the right end of the T going to the P70s.

In N2K, is there any difference in the cable between a backbone cable and a spur cable? My Garmin starter kit had a 5-m backbone and 2-m spur but I cannot see any way to tell them apart other than length.

There is a parts cost to this stuff.

I would look at going from the left end of the 5-way devise with a SEATALKng Blue cable to a T and a short drop cable to the P70. Put the Termination resistor one the end of this T. This has all of the SeaTalk system together.

Run your SeaTalkng to N2K conversion then connect to the Garmin.

I believe the "conversion" connections are more expensive than the SeaTalkng T.

The costs other than the STng/N2K converters are already baked into the cake. I have the Garmin starter kit and the STng starter kit comes with the EV100.
My problem is that I have an N2K backbone cable sealed solid into the pedestal grab rail that feeds the navpod with 1/2 tube of 4200. I also must have N2K "T" in the the pod because my MFD is the EchoMAP 64cv which uses a Garmin proprietary N2K/4-pin connector for data.
I plan to use this Raymarine-DeviceNet-M-to-SeaTalk-Ng-F-Adaptor betwen the 5-w and the N2K "T". I will then use this SeaTalk-Ng-to-NMEA-2000-Adapter-Cable-Male to connect the N2K "T" for the 64cv in the pod to the N2K "T" P70 in the pod.
I realize that these both have white ends rather than blue so I am breaking the "rules" but as far as I am aware, electrons are color blind. (please correct me if I am mistaken)

The colors are for the installer. They blue wires have more leads than the white wires I believe.

All magic to me. I have not cut open either of the wires. One day I may. I just used the color coding to get the thing assembled so I could go sailing. I spent years attaching the pink wire to the pink wire and the green to the green. Dissecting the mess when I did not understand.

Hayden, It's my understanding that N2K cable is the same for device drops (spur cables in RM language) and backbone. RM's designation of black/blue for backbone and black/white for spur helps the DIYr to get it right.

My first thought was same as John's, why put the N2K in the middle? but now knowing the N2K is in the pod, that makes sense.

I'll be following closely to see how the Garmin works with the AP. I have a Garmin CP I may try connecting as a 2nd plotter just to see how it works.

According to the electronics distributor that I talked to, the backbone and drops on the N2K system are all the same. All cords have the same male fitting on one end and same female on the other. An N2K cable is and N2K cable and the only caveat is that you should not use a cable longer than 2-meters for a drop. The means that the whole system has directionality. In my setup, the male end of the backbone is forward in the cabin and the female end is in the navpod.
On the STng system blue is backbone and white is spur (drop in N2K speak) and all cables have male only ends and the devises and connectors have only female ends. This could have greatly simplified the whole installation process except that they plugs are different for the blue backbone and white spur so they cannot be interchanged. Finally!
