if you're looking to clean the rub rail I suggest trying a magic eraser works wonders on lifelines and the rub rail on my 356, both look new.

Someone mentioned that cleaning fenders is similar to cleaning rub rail. For what it is worth, the best fender cleaner I have used is SOS pads and water. Should work on rub rail also.

For fenders I use this...

The black stuff turns yellow and then rinces right off with a little water. Fenders look new again. It is not just bleach. There are some other ingredients in there too that help break up the black crud. Don't get this stuff near your sail covers.

MEK is safe if used the proper way remember MEK will remove oils from rubber if not MEK approved.

I think MEK is no longer available in the United States.

MEKP is a peroxide. Not really the same thing as MEK. It is explosive in concentrated forms! Causes blindness etc after prolonged exposure etc! It is also one of the ingredients in the "hardener" for polyester resins.

Trichloroethylene works great but I have no idea where to get it. My source went away when I retired.

Fiberglass guys just call it MEK make for some confusion. I almost used MEK without the "P" to redo the gelcoat on a boat but fortunately talked to a fiberglass guy before I started and he enlightened me as to the difference. He once when he first started as an apprentice used the wrong MEK and regelcoated a boat and after a couple of hours when it did not cure his boss asked him which one he used. Apparently it is a fairly common error.

MEK is Methyl Ethyl Ketone
MEKP is Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide.

Even though names are slightly similar they are two very different chemicals with totally different properties.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is classified as a know human carcinogen and it’s availability and use is highly restricted. I would not use it in this application where exposure via absorption and inhalation are potentially very high.

If the rub rail is vinyl, I've had good success with LA's Totally Awesome Cleaner Degreaser. Sounds cheesy but it works.
And around here you get it at Dollar General for...a dollar. Pretty big bottle too. I use it on everything. Great stuff.
