On my Yanmar 3GM30F I am removing the pulleys and shaft couplers to gain access & remove the timing case and install a new gasket. I've removed my alternator. I've removed the pulley from the fresh water pump. Are there separate tools to remove the shaft pulley and couplers? This may be an obvious question for mechanics. My time is short for studying these issues when on the boat so I need to prepare in advance! Catalina Direct sells a coupler puller assembly, but I've seen other configurations for pulling the pulley off the shaft.

I'm try to figure out what tools I need to get the timing case off.

The shop manual says remove the retaining nut and "use a suitable puller."

Any wheel puller can get the shaft pulley off. Think prop puller...Any rental company can rent you one. They are not expensive to buy. Your main problem could be breaking the nut. You might think of just retorquing the bolts to see if some have loosened. Might be a little late to ask, but did you consider an external fix?

Hi Scott,

A few items I found useful were:

1-1/16 inch deep socket plus 1/2 inch drive breaker bar for the crankshaft pulley nut
19 inch chain clamp available at Harbor Freight to keep the pulley from rotating when removing the nut
3 jaw gear puller to get the pulley off the shaft
Assorted razor blades as scrapers to remove the old gasket from the engine block and cover
Torque wrench to tighten everything back to specification
Lots of gloves, oil pads and rags for the mess
Plastic garbage bag
Mineral spirits for cleaning the surfaces prior to bonding a new gasket with high temperature RTV

Best to drain all the oil out of the engine before you start and pull the oil filter.

You need something like this.

Figure out what size and pitch bolts are required to thread into the pulley to make sure which ever one you get has the right ones. Many Auto parts places will rent them.
If it does not seem to want to come loose after you put pressure on it tapping it with a hammer will help. NOt to knock it off tapping the face just to vibrate it to free it up.

An impact wrench makes getting the nut off much easier. Especially if the engine wants to turn while you are trying to loosen the nut. If you can't break the nut free using a ratchet or a breaker bar by hand or if the engine wants to turn while doing so hitting the handle of the wrench with a heavy hammer may get the nut started. Not the way tools that you care about should be treated but you gotta get the job done somehow.

Use a 50/50 combo of ATF and acetone if you encounter stuck parts. Works way better than PB Blaster

Impact wrench. That nut is a nasty one to get loose. Otherwise a straightforward project....

Advance Auto Parts has a complete puller set available for "rent" The deposit is the purchase price but you get most of it back - can't remember what the rental deduct what $15-$20

Mine came off without any special tools. How about you try first. Spray WD40 or penetrating oil to the thread and unscrew the bolt with socket spanner. Tap the pulley all-around to loosen the pull it out. If that don't work then use special tools like 3 or 4 jaws extractor or similar.

Last time I did it there was no rental deductable. You went in, bought, used it, brought it back got your money back. That wasn't that long ago, maybe a couple years ago... I was in PA so don't know if that matters.
