I have an 87 Hunter 28.5 and would like to have a place to mount ipad and possibly other things. This is a new boat to me (and my first boat) so i'm not 100% sure on which guard would be the best fit here. Is there anything out there that doesnt involve drilling holes into the floor to install? Havent been able to find any videos on installs. Anyone gone through this expereince and able to offer some advice?

My former Hunter 28.5 had a pedestal guard that was through bolted and so does my current Hunter 34. So unless you are lucky enough to find something that could be mounted directly on the pedestal (which is itself through bolted), looks like you will not have too many options ! I have owned my 34 over 20 years and neither the pedestal or the guard ever leaked. I recaulked both 4 years ago because I had to remove them for a repair inside the pedestal.

It’s going to be the primary thing people grab when off balance. I would secure it to the floor. Mine goes into sockets what are them threw bolted to the floor. The sockets have set screws to keep the gaurs from pulling up.

My $.02. Lateral stability is key if you have to grab it. How it attaches to the pedestal higher up is important.

Drilling holes in the sole to mount a pedestal is not a heart breaker.
You just need to properly countersink each hole and seal with
butyl tape from the SBO store or from Compass Marine.
Don't buy Home Despot putty.
You also need to have adequate backing plates for each set of screws.

Welcome to "Do it right the First Time" boat ownership.

Here is what they mean when properly preparing the hole and using MaineSails butyl tape.
I did this on my boat and it works. After I secured the Pedestal Guard, about 3 months later I had to remove it to run wires for the autopilot. The adhesion of the tape was as advertised. I eventually got it off and no damage to the cockpit fiberglass. That would not have been the case for other adhesives. The thru bolting is critical. It is a safety issue. When the boat hits a wave and try’s to toss you overboard you want to be able to grab the guard and hold on for your life. No time to be questioning “Will the guard hold or will I be swimming with the sharks.
