I have a Bauer Capitano that I would like to mount on deck of our 450 Passage. But, the only way I see to securely fasten is to cut holes in the headliner for backing plates. Does anyone have any experience installing a compressor or anything else heavy on deck. The plan is have inside a deck box or turn into a seat. And yes, it does look like I could fit a Junior in back lazarette, but I found the deal on the Capitano. Thax

How are the stern pulpits attached? Maybe a box anchored to one of the stern rails. Sailors often hang outboard motors on them, and they have seats to support people.

Cut holes in the headliner? If this is the headliner that is tensioned coated textile as on my Hunter, there is a better way. Pull it out of the edge where it is tucked in using a special tucking tool.
You can make your own tucking tool by using a flat painters spatula and rounding the corners.

Your photo is sister to ours. We have an outboard mounted to the rail, weight of outboard 95lbs. Weight of the capitano is nearly 210lbs. I'm reluctant to add 110lb life raft to rail. It's just 15 more than outboard just supported differently. Thank you for your reply

Exactly!!! How do they do that?? Removing the headliner is not an option. Looks like at the factory they build most of the interior, Then put this solid molded plastic headliner in, nicely done black silicone the seams and then attach the deck. It's nice, will last forever, I'd just hack it up and it would never look the same. My best thought so far is to make a pattern and cleanly cut access for backing plates and then make some nice wood covers that match interior. I was just hoping someone would say, "Oh, you do A, B, C and your golden" .

Our headliner is different. Please look at my reply to shemandr. I explain my headliner, but thank you for your reply, maybe it will help answer a similar question down the road if someone searches it.

I would never leave this baby exposed to the elements. It will be well protected in a custom built deck box. Probably with a nice cushioned seat on top. That's where the Bauer Jr or Oceanis would likely fit the spacious lazerette, but I couldn't pass up the sweet deal on this Capitano.
If I can't figure a way to attach on deck, this is my next plan..... I sell this one and likely get enough to buy a decent used Junior.

I have davids in the back and i want to change my 5 hp to 25, so too i am reluctant to mount this heavy engine in the same bracket i use for the 5 hp. and use the davids in the back.
If the engine is on the deck, i can lift it with the boom, but i have the same mounting problem that you have.

I don't know what the weight difference is on your 5hp to 25hp. We have a 9.9 Honda, and want to upgrade to a 20hp. Weight difference there is about 5lbs and I would be comfortable keeping in same location. I have concluded that there is no easy way to put this compressor on deck, but I am determined. I will likely make a template pattern to cut holes in the headliner and cover with wood that matches interior. Good luck with your project
That is exactly what I did to mount our (pretty heavy) 6 person Switlik life raft on the foredeck of our P42. I cut the holes (4.5 inch diameter) through the liner. bolted the 4 inch footings for the liferaft holder to marine plywood backings w/sealant, then made four round teak covers that are about 5.5 inch diameter. I affixed the covers with a single wood screw into the plywood backing plate. It's been 29 years now without any problems.
