So, I did I've this up before, but can't find it in the archives.
Big problem (imho) with the chart table design.
The issue is they use what are called "Hollywood Hinges"
What happens with the lid open, is there is a large gap, the width of the table, between the 3 hinges.
Well, when is the tabke open?
When you have a bunch of crap on the top of the table, and you've just trying to peek inside.
Well, what hapoens?
All the pencils, and what have you, slide down the lid into the crack.
Then "CRUNCH!", as you get pencils, dividers, valuable swiss watches, jammed in the crack.
So, in no time you damage the chart table tip, and possibly some swiss watches.

So, what's the solution?
Easier than you think ( in principal) but a little trick in practice.,I have a whole write up on this.

The solutionis to remove the Hollywood latches,,
And install black plastic piano hinge.
Firstly, it looks GREAT
Secondly, no more damaged desk top

Now, it's a little tricky to do this.
If your intererested, I'll explain it the best I can...
Firstly, you need to get black plastic piano hinge. They sell it in 12” lengths, and it’s really nice stuff. It’s got a proper metal rod for a hinge, and it’s sturdy.
The reason you need the plastic hinge is two fold. Firstly, it looks a lot better than the stainless hinge.
Secondly, you have enough meat in the hinge to countersink flat head screws.
A bit about this....
You can use #6 screws maximum.
You must stagger drill the holes, so that the screws on both hinge leaf are 1/2 hole distance spread.
So, the question is:
Why didn’t hunter use piano hinges? Simple answer. They are very hard to align & install in a situation where the hinges are fully closing. All the measuring in the world will still make it a tricky job. So, they elected to put in hinges where they could router the pockets on the NC, and drop them in.

So, here’s how to do this, without being a carpentry school graduate.

You need to drill the screw holes in the hinge countersunk & staggered across the 2 leaves.
Remove the table lid, take off the old hinges. Paint them gold, attach rhinestones, and list them on eBay.

Now, you mount the new hinge on the lid, making sure it’s straight, and the pivot point is clear of the top.
Drill for all the screws, and insert all of them. These are small threads. Don’t use brass screws, (stainless for sure), and drill the right size. The largest screw you can use Is # 6 because of the CS. Use Robertson screws!
make sure you drill on the center line thickness of the lid.

Now, remove all the screws.
Next, take a few 1/2” wide pieces of the thin double sided carpet tape, and stick them on the lid as follows:
One at each end
One in the middle
And 2 equidistant between Center & ends.
Peel of the other protective paper, and stick the hinge on, EXACTLY over the screw holes, just like you had it screwed down. Don’t put any screws in!!
Make sure you use carpet tape,,,, not the high adhesive foam tape.

Now, full empty the chart table, (good time to clean out all the crap anyway), and get a stack of paper back books, cds, and playing cards.
Put the books on each side, until they are about 1/4” lower than the underside of the table.
Now, using CDs, and a few playing car, make it so that the table lid is laying flat exactly the height and pitch as if it were normally closed.
Now, get some 3m double sided foam stick tape 3/4”W.
Run a piece down the table top where the other leaf of the hinge will attach. Peel off the second release tape.
Now, slowly move the chart table forward, and press it hard against the 3m tape.
Then, with a thin knife, get behind the hinge where it is attached to the lid, and pop it off, as you slightly move the lid backwards.
Now, you have now transferred the hinge where you need to mount it.
Drill all the screw holes, and put in screws.
Remove screws, hinge, and tape.
Now, re-install hinge in place.

Lastly, you will need an assistant to hold the lid in the air, while you quickly attach the lid to the hinge. It’s not terribly easy, but Robertson screws help immensely

And the problem is forever solved

Forgot to mention about drilling the hinges. There are a lot of holes, and you could easilly drive yourself crazy trying to do this accurately, While a drill press would help, here is a very Skookum (Canadian for neat) trick, which will allow you to do this perfectly with a hand drill.
Mark a hole in the hinge 1/2” from the end on CL. Drill a 1/8” hole.
Get a small piece of clear plexi. Drill 3 1/8” holes 1.5” apart in a very straight line.
Get a 2 more 1/8” drill bits.
Overlay the plexi, so that hole#1 is on top of the first hinge hole. Insert the stub end of one drill bit to act as a dowel.
Now, rotate the plexi, so that you are Lining up the holes in the plexi, on the CL of the hinge. Drill hole #3, and pop in the shank of the other spare drill bit to lock the plexi in place. Now drill the middle hole.
Now, simply “walk” the jig down the hinge, while drilling the holes. Note, there is no measuring, and all the holes are on an exact pitch. Don’t worry about where the last hole ends up. It won’t be the same distance from the end as the first one.
On the other leaf, instead of starting 1/2” from the end, start at 1”.
Hope this is helpful.
