There's no place like home

While most of the country is under stay-at-home orders, some owners are struggling with marinas and launch ramps that are off-limits, too.

While you can't get to your boat, how are you scratching your sailing itch? TV/movies? Simulators and games? Planning for the next cruise or plotting a repair or upgrade?

Perhaps your boat is home with you. If so, are you doing anything with it?

And if you can access your marina, are you sailing or working on your boat?

Mask up, then share your thoughts and frustrations here.

It's frustrating that I got the boat rigged on 20 Mar and haven't been out yet. There was some additional work to be done by the yard, so the boat isn't in her own slip, and since MD DNR says recreational boating isn't essential, I can't move the boat across the creek for that.

None of the above! Tks for asking!

Been out twice now, each a week of very quiet time around the islands. Marinas closed to transient boaters, but this one prefers coves and inlets for anchoring solitude..Making ready to go out again for a week or so. Just need to finish up one more home project that has been in abeyance aging. A great time of the year for moderate sailing conditions. Must try out my new Delrin bow rollers. Even got some boat projects done while anchoring.

Hopefully, the Canucks will open the border soon so that we can embark on another extended cruise this season. With schools closed until Septober, lots of time to enjoy the time off sailing the Salish Sea. Vancouver Island 360 beckons, eh?

Here in Singapore we're in Circuit Breaker period from April 7 thru to May 4. It is one step before lockdown. Meaning, Social Distancing, all non essential facilities closed, all to stay at home and only go out for take-aways and to exercise alone. No extended family gatherings and worst of all no boating. Access to marina by appt and limited to 1hr/week to check boats for leaks and secure mooring lines. All non essential boat traffic not allowed by authority.
So I've to do my repairs in small bite spread over many weeks. Where possible I bring boat stuff home to work on.

So far I am able to access the boat in the yacht yard 24/7 and work on it alone. That could change if they see people are not practicing safe social distancing. I’ve been to the boat on a few of the nicer days this month but it looks like we will have chilly weather for the next week or so.
It appears that all Chicago harbors will be closed until the stay at home order is lifted. It was to end April 30, but no surprise, the mayor said today it will be extended into May. At this point, I don’t expect to be in the harbor before mid-June at best.
I have ordered some spring boat maintenance supplies on-line that I would ordinarily just pick up at West Marine.

For a good look at at a great skipper watch “Shackleton’s Captain”. The story about Capt Worsley and his truly epic 800 mile voyage with five other crew members from the ice crushed ship Endurance from Elephant Island across the southern ocean in winter to South Georgia Island. Amazon Prime I think.

Just bent on a new Genny. And of course it deserves new sheets. WA waters are open but destinations are not. So, we have to test the new sail and and anchor out somewhere. That’s what’s nice about the local area. Anchor out somewhere.....

Hunter Legend 40.5 Shoreline Marina Long Beach CA
SoCal Long Beach marinas are open but monitoring activities to close off if irresponsible activity is observed. All beach and park parking is closed. Fuel dock is open as are pump outs and marina heads. Outside anchorage is open and busy (Catalina Island is effectively closed.) We have been taking advantage of the time to work on chasing and repairing some electrical issues. (I HATE pulling wire.) Very quiet, almost deserted, except for live-boards.

Michigan has a strange rule in effect right now. You cannot use a motorized boat, but you can use a a kayak, canoe or sailboat. I wonder if that means I can use my sailboat as long as I don’t use the motor...

It may not make any difference anyway. Upper peninsula had 20 inches of snow in places yesterday and the northern lower peninsula is getting snow squalls today.

Many Marinas like ours are in smaller communities with limited medical facilities. Residents are very uncomfortable with 100+ come from aways, bringing god knows what and putting pressures on strained infrastructure. For many it may be time to fill the tub and raid the grandkids toy box. Stay safe!

In a brighter side. Beginning in the next statement, USAA auto insurance is dropping their rates 20% because people are driving less during the stay-at-home order.
Any other auto insurance companies doing that?

Our marina is open but we are not allowed to go saiing. With an abbreviated work schedule I am working on the boat. I am down to cleaning and reorganizing lockers and making soft shackles but my supply of dyneema just ran out. Boat interior has never been cleaner.

Geico is offering 15% off. Gee, maybe I should tell them what other companies are doing.....

I have used this time for some maintenance including Gelcoat repair and fuel tank cleaning. I got out last Saturday for a few hours. All of this solo so I don't feel guilty about leaving the house. My house > My car > My boat. Nothing wrong with that!

Our boat and yard that launches it is about 600 feet away, so we walk by it every day. The boatyard furloughed their 50-some full time employees but they have a crew of 3 working on and launching docks in the harbor.

I walked by the foreman of yard hauling and launching and asked him, "Charlie, will we have a season 2020?"

His response was two palms up and a 'who knows' look. That's about what we know, right now.

We've had some nasty weather. Tons of heavy wet snow and a ferocious gale that blew near 60 knots. Our boat cover is still intact, waiting,....

We had some sailing during the gale:
