In mast foil winter rattle

Hello all,

So took sails down today.... spending night on boat and in mast foil making some noise in the wind. Any tips on stabilizing it so it doesn’t bang the inside of mast......

After I take the sail down I tie a spare length of line to the bottom of the swivel, and use the halyard to pull the swivel about half way back up the mast. Having the swivel there seems to cut down (but maybe not completely eliminate) the banging. Just make sure you have the down haul tied on well and don’t lose it.

I’ve read of people using pool noodles tied to the halyard and inserted into the mast slot to prevent the banging. Never tried that though.

We do as the post above, but also have a cover for the slot as without it we quickly become the the most hated boat in a quarter mile, because of the howling it makes when the wind blows at the right angle.

We also do as davidasailer26 then we run the line aft and tie it off tight. Stops about 80% of the noise.

It’s summer rattle rather than “winter rattle” here. Regardless of how you minimize it, those of us who often sleep onboard at marinas thank you for minimizing it.

Well unless you sleep on your boat in the storage parking lot in the winter, my boat won’t be an issue either way....... ha. During season no rattle or line slapping!

I put 3 or 4 pieces of 6‘ long 3/4” split foam pipe insulation on the foil and slide them about half way up the mast. The main halyard is pulled out of the slot and secured away from the mast.
