Staysail installation

You will also need to add some structural members under the deck and tied to the hull if you actually intend to set a sail from this stay. Your deck is not strong enough for what you are thinking of doing.
Our staysail has straps down to the keel and a whole lot of structural reinforcement under the deck.
You will find that adding another sail to a rig not designed for it may require running backstays and will certainly change the balance of the rig under sail, and possibly not at all favorably.

Cough up a couple of dollars for consulting by the Hunter guys on this site. It may be that the boat has a built in backing plate as mine does. There is a 450 and two 456's on my docks with them. It seemed to be a popular option.

@BlueHeronSailing adding a staysail can improve your storm sail choices when in open waters. As @capta points out, you need to be sure to have the proper structure attached to the hull. Bulk heads are the tool.

It looks like I have to put a backing plate as well. If you come up with any solutions, I’d appreciate the feedback. Also as I look into it I’ll do the same. Thanks

What are you using the stay for? How far back is it? What's under the point of attachment you contemplate? Is it just for a hanked-on storm sail? What are you doing with the new stay at the mast? (e.g., Jumpers, running back stays, etc.?)

if you mount the stay in the vicinity of the bulkehead forward to the head, you may do something different than if you want something like a rig with a double genoa/working jib option.

What are you doing with the anchor locker and its "lid"?

I want to put a staysail. The mast is already configuered for this. I need to know how to put a back plate in for a Padeye on the deck. It should go about 6” behind the anchor locker

That's in and above the ceiling in the forward head? My guess is that you'll need to tie it into the hull with something that spans to the hull.

I'd seen turnbuckle and cable arrangements (we have one for the removable storm jib stay (that I never use) on our J-Boat. It takes the load and transfers down to the structure below.

You said the mast is designed to receive the rig? Doesn't your boat have an in the mast furler and the Hunter's "complex" rig?
I'm surprised that is so without a provision at the "deck" and something I've not seen on any picture of a Hunter 456. How are you going to deal with the attachment and the transfer of forces to the mast and aft to the deck?

If the boat layout is similar to the design shown in @SG ‘s message I looks like you could tie in a “Chainplate” to the Bulkhead at the anchor locker. Perhaps you can configure a “L” shaped plate that ties into the bulkhead and serves as the backing plate for the on deck padeye you have indicated. This way the bulkhead transfers the forces of the staysail across the whole of the deck and to the hull (assuming the bulkhead is adequately tabbed to the hull).

It is an idea. Not sure of the material engineering, but it is a start at a way to properly secure the staysail to the boat.
