Do you really want a hole in your boat that is, and I quote; "water resistant", not water proof and a fan that only works "when with sunlight"?
I wouldn't.

Is any vent / dorade water proof? Do you mean these vents may leak in the rail, or they won’t keep water out if the boat rolls over?

I have 2 Nicro vents and I don’t have any problems with them, but I haven’t rolled the boat over (yet).

Dimension wise, it looks like the big hole need to be enlarge to fit Solatek (Taiwan made). Marinco is slightly more than double the $price. Hmmm...
Another question, is the new marinco 4" day/night vent a drop in replacement for the older Marinco-Nicro 4" day/night vent? Any idea anyone?

UH I personally, will not take any boat to sea that has holes in it I can't plug up. My dorades come with a bronze cap; you unscrew the funnel and screw in the cap!
As for rolling over, it's probably a lot easier to get the same effect by having the wave wash over the boat rather than turning the boat over. But hey whatever floats your boat. lol

I did not know that Capta...I have never owned a boat with proper dorades.

Thanks for the education.

I just went into my local store and asked this question. I have older Nicro fittings on my boat, one is capped, the other has an older day/night solar vent in it. I tried to find one to fit in the other fitting but the guy I talked to in the store said the new Nicro vents do not fit in the old slide in fittings. You have to take out the fitting and screw in a new vent.

I don't mind taking out all the old stuff/fittings so long as I don't have to cut the hole bigger to fit the new. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I replaced an old style 4" day and night with the new 4" model (the one that has an LED light in it), this is correct, hole size is same across both.

You can still buy the previous model (N20704W) but you may have the model before.

Ok my heart rate came down seeing you mentioned the new will fit into old hole. Thanks :)

Oh good- the plastic flange (I think that’s what it’s called) it mounts to had to come out and be replaced with the new flange. That’s the part that has sealant around it that the fan part mounts to. The second generation vents without the light are still available (they are a little shorter) these are the snap in models, but you may have a first generation one.

Also a great addition to it is to buy a higher capacity rechargeable battery at some point.

What is the difference between the Marinco 3" and the 4" vents? They seem to be virtually the same.

It’s the diameter of the vent, 3” or 4” respectively. Not sure if the diameter of the unit or fan size is different. 4” does flow more air.

By vent I mean the tube that goes through the boat, 3” has a smaller cutout.

FWIW the newer (current and previous generation) Marinco day and nights are completely closable, another good reason pay the extra $ over what looks to be an RV bathroom vent.

Finally when I do get around to replacing my old Nicro vent with new Marinco 4" vent, and horror! The new vent need larger hole!!
Gonna figure out how to cut existing hole bigger.

Ken, the only way I have been able to accurately make an existing hole larger is by temporarily filling the existing hole. You may get lucky and find a hole saw with the same ID as your hole but if not, remember you don't need to entirely fill the hole. Cut a piece of wood with the length the diameter of the hole then start trimming to fit.

I replaced my, not very old, Marinco 4" vent with the Solatek that you are considering. I did need to enlarge the hole slightly, maybe an eighth of an inch. Did it with a jigsaw in a plexiglass hatch. I'm very impressed with the new vent. It is very quiet, moves a lot of air, well constructed, and no leaks in a blowing rain storm. The solar array is larger than the Marinco and hopefully the little motor will last longer.

Or return and get a new Nirco vent. How long did the last one last?
Nicro and Marinco are the same manufacturer; this link is for the solar vent, not the day/night model. The day/night has a rechargeable battery, the solar vent does not.

If you had a solar vent and not one of the day/night models, the hole diameters will be different. Your original question stated you had a day/night model. I have fit all 3 generations of day/night 4” on my boat and I did not need to change the hole size (unless I am not recalling correctly) - are you replacing a solar vent?

I find the 24 hour operation to be great- if you don’t need it you could put a new solar vent in but I don’t have firsthand knowledge of this swap, possible something is different.

Good luck!
