So I tried to stay on topic and offer constructive comments in this thread but now I’m just addicted to “Trunk Monkey” videos. Thanks a lot!!!
Of course it’s on topic. We all have boats and children that need protecting. And besides, what’s one more addiction?

Anti-theft anti piracy device, as demonstrated in this nautical movie:
Can also be used to get revenge on those inconsiderate dock neighbors by advancing the effects of electrolysis on their props.

Perhaps unrelated, but every time I see that famous "run for your life" picture, I always look at the guys on the left carrying their camera equipment. I know it's a common reaction or habit to grab your stuff, as witnessed by the people looking for their carry-on luggage when an airplane is crashing. Perhaps if we can train ourselves to switch from "everything normal" to "emergency" modes faster, we'd all be safer. Something that I'm going to work on this sailing season - faster triage of emergencies.

I guess it depends on where your boat is. Were mine in a marina where crime is a problem, I'd move it to a safer one had I that option. If there's some problem, I want the dockmaster and my slip neighbors to be able to get in without having to do major damage.

That is a good point. When I'm at the marina I ask my dock mates if they would like me to call them if I see anything odd about their boat. So far every one has said yes and offered to do the same. It is a good way to make connections and establish an on-going relationship.

Those are the smart ones. Notice the second guy from the left has stumbled and decides a quick hanging death is better than being eaten alive. That's only possible because he's had the foresight to grab his camera. The guy on the far left has very reasonably grabbed a useful shield. Sure it won't stop a determined bear, but dog catchers know that even a simple clipboard can cause an aggressive dog to balk at attacking when faces with the flat shield line object held between it and its intended victim. ;)

It is funny but it is actually photo shopped.

No matter what you do, it's in your best interest for the weakest point of entry to be the main hatch. Locks only stop "casual" thieves. The deliberate thieves carry tools, and you don't want the damage from breaking and entering to exceed the value of what they could steal from inside .

"I don't have to be faster than the bear, just faster than you"
I have literally been in that situation. As were leaving the scene with the bear following us, I was in front of our group of three when I yelled, "Hey Blake, we don't have to outrun the bear, we just have to outrun Steve!!". Steve, who has a limp, replied with words I can't repeat, lest I be banned.

It was just a curious black bear and not really a threat. When we came up on it we were just about 20 feet away. We started by walking away slowly, but as one person would speed up, so would the others because no one want to be last and it ended up in a run. It was quite comical and we were laughing as we escaped. Beer may or may not have been involved.
