Does anyone know what the mounting points on the top of the bow pulpit are used for? my lifelines run at an angle to the bottom/front of the bow pulpit.

Picture?
Catalina probably dipped the last connection of the lifeline so that the sail will set properly when off the wind.

my '73 is this what you are referencing? No specific use that I'm aware of-- nice place to tie off a halyard ...

I did not think they had a purpose but was wondering why they put them there. Guess it's just something Catlina did...

I think they are just an alternate mounting point for the lifelines - if your jib is cut high enough.

They are 2 different positions for either having high or low cut jibs/genoas. Your lifelines will only fit one or the other.

Here in our marina all the boats that have lifelines have upper and lower lifelines running from the pullpit railing to the pushpit railing. It's only when I joined this forum that I saw life lines being terminated at deck level on the pullpit railing.

So my guess is that the railings were made with this in mind and it's up to the owner to decide what he wants to do.

It was also in this forum that I learned about raising the height of the foresail by using a pendant.

Boats in our boat yard and the green hull/grey deck boat is our sail training L26.

I think running the lifelines to the upper attachment point would look very cool, and provide enhanced security when changing headsails or working with the anchor. I'd do it in a second, if the sails were cut to allow it. But the180 drifter would need a LOT of its foot cut off, and the 150 almost as much. A 120 on a very long pendant (24"?) would probably be high enough to work, but you'd be heeling a lot at the upper end of the sail's wind range. Plus there's the cost of having the sails recut, and replacing the upper lifeline with a longer one. Too many compromises.
