Design/ Build Stern Rail Seating

Thought it might be a nice view for the Admiral...she agrees.
The seat, 1" HDPE Starboard (with 4" cushion to be made)...will slide from port to starboard as she chooses.
The support strut located beneath will unlock (hopefully using a cam lock type fitting)...and store upright with a Velcro band against the sternrail, when not in use.
Will make back support cushion as well that slides side to side.
All will be fully removable, and the seat can also pivot to a hanging vertical position.
Does not interfere with the swim platform & ladder deployment, the outboard, or the tiller.

My Admiral loves the view from the stern rail seats. Interesting design. You might need a patent.

We love our stern rail seats! We even bought padded, folding, bucket seats to snap on from Defender. They are comfy! With a tiller extension, I can steer from my seat. They also open up our cockpit

Thanks! We sit in them often at the dock too.

Patent? ....wow, that's a compliment if I've ever heard one!
Thanks Tom...

jssailem, I really like your seats as they are close to the outside edge of the hull. I would think, especially on a lighter boat, having the stern seats set up as close to hiking seats as possible would serve two purposes and would be incredibly efficient. Not that your Cal 35 exceptionally light. :)

So true @uncledom. She is not a exceptionally light gal. I need to be continuously conscience about what I store aboard and what I don’t. I usually just take stuff off her and don’t tell her.
She rewards me by dancing a little quicker during our next sail.

i'm a huge fan of bean bag chairs on a boat. nice seating were ever you want. my racer buds would laugh at me for having them on board for a long distance race but then would be fighting over them as the race went by.
i always have them on board. never see them on other boats. good for man overboard i suppose too

Paul, nice work. You did a really nice job at bending the SS tube! Just a thought why not just put another seat on the starboard side rather then one that slides? I think that would offer seating on both sides, and both could be folded down out of the way if needed.
I am very impressed with your metal bending craftsmanship.

:) :) Hank on jib and bean bag chairs,...you are a hard guy to figure out, Jon. I wonder if a bean bag would fit here.

Oh sure you might Jon... Scrunch down in the beanbag, dangle your feet in the water. No snoozing, need to keep an eye out for sharks.

Thanks....the reasoning is, I want to manage the weight on my aft rails, so it's only one person at a time.
The set up is quite strong and handles all 200lbs of me with ease, but we rarely have others aboard our boat, so not really an issue.
Will load a few more pics when the project is done and the cover is removed.

IMG_2098.JPG IMG_2100.JPG IMG_2095.JPG IMG_2103.JPG IMG_2104.JPG Finished mounting with a recessed HDPE block, a curved routered recess to form fit the railing, a centre pin to lock into place.
Made a zippered Sunbrella cover to protect it from UV when not in use.
Also a 4" foam seat pad and zippered rail cover.
Still have to install some stainless snaps to the underside edges.
The admiral smiled when she seen it...
