I’m for replacing the table, but my lunkhead skipper thinks if the builder put it there it must be right! Me, I think it’s a overly large, bulky, cumbersome poorly placed and only good for storing my vodka and tequila.
We are refitting our 1985 35’Oday, has anyone removed the salon table.

I have an '83 OD34 but I believe it is exactly the same interior layout. We use the table regularly for eating, cards & games, paperwork, etc. Not sure how we would do these things without it. And I find it a secure handhold and leaning post when going forward in a seaway. If you can live without a table at all removing it would be OK. But if you want some sort of table the alternatives are limited. A portable table is a storage problem and not secure. A bulkhead mount would be difficult with the bench layout. Your boat - your choice - but given my experience, I think the 'lunkhead' may be right.
I have a feeling my battle is lost, I'm probably the "Lunkhead" in this case. I appreciate your swift reply.
When Karma's table was temporarily removed there was much extra space. However IMHO in this case the "Lunkhead" is right. After all, where would you set your margarita down?
Gerrard, I've thought about this as well so you're not alone in your Lunkheadery. I find it awkward to get into and out of the settee on the port side, especially if the berth is made up, it's sort of a flop in situation. I've been thinking of modifying the table to shorten it by a foot or so to make it easier to access the settee/berth. I still want a table there, just not such a large one. My thought is to utilize the same mounting location on the floor but rebuild the table so it doesn't extend forward as far. I'd cut the vertical stainless steel leg/hoop and re-weld it to a horizontal strut that would then reach forward to the mounting location on the floor. The horizontal strut does get in the way a bit, but I store bins between the table and settee anyway and these would help hold them in place when sailing. Hard to describe so see photo. I haven't committed to the idea yet, but it's been noodling around in my head. Thoughts?
