House batteries dying!

Cost/20hr rate/Cycle. Golf Cart are true deep cycle and can be recharged many more times than standard “deep cycle” batteries. I charge my 4 GC2’s with the Sterling (all outputs tied together) and use ACR’s for charging the start and windlass batteries. That way the alternator can charge all also. @Maine Sail has a good article on his site explaining this. https://marinehowto.com/what-is-a-deep-cycle-battery/

Wow, what a primer; I thought I knew something about batteries! I do know you can read for years about batt chemistry, cycles, ah's, etc and still be suspect but Marinehowto is very convincing. So, when my (3) 2015 WM 4d AGMs purchased in 2015 ($2,000) give it up am I going to 6v lead acid venting batteries that have to be watered regularly?..., how often do you water and is venting a real concern? I will absolutely make a honest exam of where I am. Why would Hunter Marine sell a new boat with $2,000 worth of AGM's when they could have equalled or better for 1/2 that with t105's? Could it be the days on end sailing on a 15 degree incline? It happens. Marinehowto specifically mentioned incline of batteries! I know several of you have changed to 6v systems..how's it going? Did you have to reconfigure your charger/inverter?

Just a point of information. We took ownership of Maxine in late 2007. She came with 3 4d Deka Gel batts and a group 31 Gel start battery. We will need to replace them in the Spring after 11 years of service. We treated them well. Kept them charged up while cruising and never left them plugged in at the dock keeping ice cubes frozen. Just a data point for your information.

Please understand that article only deals with the differences in FLOODED batteries. GEL or AGM are different animals and each has their own pro's & con's. There are also high quality AGM and GEL batteries just like there are high quality flooded batteries. East Penn makes a tremendous deep cycle GEL battery but I would personally only use their AGM product for starting purposes.

As I have mentioned countless times before GEL deep cycle batteries, specifically those made by Easy Penn/Deka (sold under many names) or Sonnenschein Prevailers (Sonnenschein helped set up East Penn/Deka using their manufacturing process) are some of the longest lasting deep cycle batteries you can buy. I have customers that routinely exceed ten years and one customer that went 17 years on his GEL bank. I have a good friend who circled the globe twice, on the same GEL bank, while routinely dipping to 80% DOD. He literally abused the heck out of those batteries yet they took him around the planet twice.

The catch with GEL is they need to be charged properly... Sadly GEL got a bad rap because folks tried to charge them at AGM or flooded voltages, with no temp compensation, and ruined them in short order.

dakno, two more points to ponder. in the 79' fastnet race disaster, the number one cause of injury to the racers was acid burns from dumped batteries. prolly from poorly secured wet batteries breaking up. inside these hulls was like a washing machine. that being said, 100% of the boats that quit racing and 'hove to' did not get damaged.

I remember Ted quoted as saying after the Fastnet...."we were eating a steak dinner at the height of the storm...." well found boat well handled.

Of course after losing the America's Cup qualifying competition with a "revolutionary" Britton Chance design, Ted was quoted as saying "...at least a turd is pointed at both ends...."
Gotta love that Ted Turner back at that time.

Or even better when the wing-keeled Aussie 12 sailed past him in "Liberty" .... "...man, that boat is fast..."
Gotta love him back then.

I'm not sure you meant to say 6v systems. The systems using 6v batteries remain 12v systems by putting two of the 6v batteries in series. If you are using four 6v batteries, you would put two of the 6v batts in series to make a 12v batt, same with the other two, then parallel the two 12v batts to make a 12v bank.
If you change from AGM's to flooded, you will have to reconfigure or replace your charger. If the flooded batts are properly charged, and are maintained with a float charge, you do not have to water them often.

We purchased this 2004 Hunter 44 DS and almost immediately left Annapolis, MD for Florida. Turned out batteries were toast. Out of necessity bought flooded 4 D batteries. All was well until one night, thought we were watching 12 volt TV. Turns out the TV was wired directly to the inverter so it had unfettered access to the batteries. Good news is they were cheap batteries, bad news is we may have damaged them beyond repair.
Trying to figure out how many watts of solar and maybe wind generation we need to run the freezer/fridge and a few other things off of the solar and wind if needed.

We were in a similar situation. On a trip from Florida to Massachusetts, our two 4D's died at Cape May, NJ. We installed new batteries, but they didn't last very long, nor did several subsequent sets of batteries. Our onboard battery charger tended to overcharge the batts, as did the basic controller for our 135W solar panel. We run the fridge all season long, and anchor out a lot. The 135W panel was ok, but then we bought a Torqeedo outboard for the dinghy, and needed more charging capacity. We upgraded to two 160W panels and a MPPT controller. The new controller charges the batts through the proper stages of charge, and maintains a float charge. No more over charging, and the batts last a lot longer.
I still intend to switch to four 6v golf cart batteries at some point. I actually built a 12v battery bank for our house with four 6v batts and a Zantrex charger/inverter, and it works quite well, so the boat is next!
