Windshield removal

On my 49, I had to just remove both deck windshields. They are both glazed, and cracked a bit.
I wanted to use the protection of the winter cover to change them over the winter.
I’ll actually wait till spring, as it gets to be an oven in there once the weather warms up a bit, so it will cure quickly, while protected from rain.

Both windshields out, including removing the plastic ceiling bezels
Not one scratch or chip on the plexi windows

Hi Art,
I used your technique for windshield removal and it worked great on my Passage 42 windshield. I see that your two windshield pieces are of a much smaller width than the P42 wraparound. But let me tell you of my BIG mistake. I took it out, cleaned everything up and taped all around to reinstall the windshield. What I didn't plan for was the fact that the sun bowed the entire thing. After I frantically placed about an entire box of one dozen Dow 795 tubes on the periphery, I dropped my windshield in place and couldn't match up the screw holes because the thing had expanded and bowed too much in the sun. In my panic I settled for an inadequate placement, but one which is holding OK for a few seasons until I get to do it correctly. (If my brain had been functioning adequately, I would have realized that the screws are irrelevant and just let it set as it was). Anyway, just letting you know my issue with doing the windshield replacement in the sun during the spring/summer.

I agree that the screws don’t do much.
I’m planning on replacing mine in the spring with the winter cover still on,
Did you re-use the old windshield?
Did you prep the plexi at all for adherence to the 795?

Hi Art,
Yes, I did re-use the old windshield. For prep I just cleaned it up really well (I think I used isopropyl), and then sanded it with fine sandpaper just where the Dow 795 was going to go. I did that on both the plexi and on the fiberglass it was adhering to.
Many years ago, I think it was about 1993 or so, I did replace my windshield. Hunter had not used any 795 on the center panel, and the windshield had bowed away from the support by about 3/4 inch to 1 inch. I wasn't happy about that and bought a new windshield that fit tightly against all supports. That may have been overkill, and I'm just reusing the same windshield.

Yes, I did re-use the old windshield.

Hi Paul, our original P42 large front port light is still in good condition although the bed seal is slowly breaking down. I've used some fresh sealant to fill in where some leaks had formed, but now stopped. At some point I will likely do what you did; reuse the original port light, but remove, clean and re-bed with fresh sealant.
