Hello. I need to repair the inmast furling in my HUNTER 49 2009. Does anyone know a good rigger? The boat is in Dominican Republic, so the person has to be able to make the trip.
Thanks
Miguel

Miguel,

How far are you from Boqueron PR? Maybe someone in PR, VI or BVIs, What is wrong with furler? I think I have a twisted foil or a connecting bearing (in between the foils), I removed the battens and replaced with thinner ones and its working ok. but eventually need to be addressed. A couple of starting points for riggers- search boat us surveyors list and contact one or 2 in PR/VI/BVI and ask for riggers. second is joint BRISA on FB or go to brisasailing, com and post questions, they have a very active racing organization, Good luck and post what you find out.

Hello and thanks for your comments, I am not far from Puerto Rico (146nm) but I would not cross the Mona Passage without my main sail... There is a problem inside the mast, is dificult to raise the furling conector even without the sail and I already checked the tension of the the foils and is ok, you mentioned a twisted foil or connecting bearing, is it possible to check that without taking the mast down?
Regards
Miguel

What is the manufacturer name on your mast? Z-Spar, Seldon...?

Miguel,

Is the mailsail is down? The foils are 10-20 ft long they have a stay bearing and connecting bearing.
All you do is go up to the joints are rotate the foils, if they rotate as a unit you are ok if not the bearing may have failed. also make sure that the sail groves are aligned (if not another sign of bearing failure). While you are up check to see if the foil/bearing have a screw or something preventing the top bearing from moving up the foil. I had this problem before on and older boat and could not lower the jib as the furler top earing was hitting the loosened set screw. I pulled the jib so hard that it damaged the plastic inner bearing, yikes. The video has a different method connecting the foils. Its my understanding that the foils fit tru the mast slot and you do not have to take the mast down to replace foils/bearings.
I also have a little issue raising the mail and I twist the furler until it aligns the groves. I hope this help. You can PM me on this site. My recommendation about Puerto Ricco is the it may be cheaper to fly someone from there than the mainland.

I believe that would be a selden mast, the extrusion I believe is 1 piece and tension on the extrusion is critical for operation, if your tension is too tight you are binding midway up the mast due to the masts B&R's rig prebend. Here is something relatively easy to check.

Good Luck with your issue

It’s a selden spar
You can’t remove the tube through the slot.
You should have someone go up in a chair, and see what the upper bearing is catching on.
My guess is your rig needs to come out.
The furling tube comes out through the mast head. Not a small job
