Removing non functioning refrigeration

My 93 C30 has a non functioning Adler Barbour refrigeration system with a cold plate in the ice box.
We may install a new refrigeration system in the future but for now we easily get by with a Polar Bear soft sided cooler.
I'm considering removing the non functioning system to regain some space in the lazaret.
Any concerns doing so?

Capturing the refrigerant. It is likely either an ozone depleting gas or a greenhouse gas.

The whole point of switching from freon to r-134a was that the 134a was much less of an environmental problem, even though much less efficient. The gas is not toxic, but I wouldn't go breathing it directly if you release it in the boat, and it will disperse easily with a little ventilation.
Chances are, the unit probably doesn't work because it is out of gas, so that might not be a problem. Otherwise, I can see no problem removing the compressor, lines and the holding plate. As a matter of fact, I'd really like the holding plate, but shipping it down here just wouldn't be worth it. Maybe sell it at a used sailboat parts place?

Well if its going in the trash heap I will pay for shipping to here in NY for the entire unit and see if I can get it working. I am contemplating creating a dedicated ice box in my boat......

What’s wrong with it?[/QUOTE
I don't really know other than the cold plate does not get cold and the compressor does not appear to run.
I have enough higher priority projects than troubleshooting the AB system.

But, no one said it is past it's prime so maybe I'll leave it for now and tinker with it another day. Maybe it will be an easy fix.
@NYSail If I do pull I'll let you know.

When our system gave up the ghost I replaced it with a brand new unit. Someday it will help when it comes time to sell the boat. That applies to all of the many systems on our boat. Yours just may need a repair. Might pay to have a marine refrigeration tech look at it.
