To all our friends on the Alabama/Florida gulf coast. Please be safe and get the heck out if you need to. This is going to be nasty. I'm just north of Clearwater, Fl. and this afternoon's high tide pushed water way up into my yard and it's not going out much. Next high tide at 1:30 tomorrow morning and it'll be three and a half feet above MLW on top of what doesn't go out. Unfortunately my house is not a boat and doesn't float but it sure enough floods. Evac prep going on. Stay safe, all.

The latest forecasts that I am hearing on the radio here are calling for a 10' storm surge.

That's in the panhandle. Their calling for 2 -4 feet here but on top of an already high, low tide that may be enough to push water into my house. My back porch is only 6 feet above MLW and another 9 inches puts it in the house. The master bedroom is the old carport. Well, that sits 9 inches lower than the main floor. You get the picture. :(

Oh yea, & I think that today is a king tide too.
Yes, new moon is tonight. Why can't these things ever happen on the quarter moons?
At least I'm stocked with . :)

Thank you all. Next three hours are the key. Oh!, and I also have pizza. :dancing:
Please be safe in the Panhandle. I may only have to deal with a foot or so of water in my house, (been there, done that), you're taking the brunt of it. God Speed, my friends.

Pizza gets you through times of no power and water better than times of having power and water gets you through times of no pizza.
Yes, Sir, my thoughts exactly as I left my boat. Cook or pizza to go? Well, that was a no-brainer.
As I write this, Hurricane Michael is now a Cat 4. Lucky with the flooding here, so far. Next high tide 2:30 pm this afternoon. Even if I flood, it will not compare to the devastation in the Panhandle. Be safe, my friends.

Thinking this morning about Apalachicola. The city docks there are fixed height, so any boats left there may wind up onshore. Up the way just a few blocks is a hotel that has floating docks. I've stayed there a few times on my travels and I bet the entire dock system floats off.. Very sad. Feel for everyone over there, since many here have still not recovered from Harvey last year

Back-to-back hurricanes - H.Matthew and now H.Florence will effectively empty out parts of rural coastal North Carolina. Federal flood insurance continues to subsidize unsustainable development on the southeast coastal beaches.

Well, I left town yesterday afternoon, just received text notice that the power is out at my house in Panama City. Not looking forward to what will come next.

Federal flood insurance
Allows rebuilding to new FEMA requirements and elevations.
But...
Some areas are allowed to build back on beaches where Sandy hit.
New construction must withstand Storm surge, have Wave shields and at elevations the sometimes need elevators.
The Coast attracts development.
Jim...

Does this Hurricane seem to be moving really fast? I don't have a recent memory of a hurricane that traveled so quickly. It is expected to be off of the coast of Virginia by 6:00 AM Friday.
