My wife and I just signed up for our ASA 101/103/104/114 courses on a live aboard out of St Thomas in January. We want to follow this up with a chartered sail with a captain for spring break and I'm looking for advice on where to go. If this goes well we'll do a bareboat this summer in the Bahamas probably.

We'll have two boys, 8 and 10, my wife, and my parents. Ideally warm water and plenty of islands to explore. Would also like to fish.

We've been to USVI quite a bit and have been to St Maarten/Anguilla, been to Exuma, but never on a boat. I see the VI are about six degrees warmer air in March and water about five degrees. Would prefer water 80+F if possible.

I'd appreciate any advice you guys can offer!

First thing you need to understand is that the Bahamas are NOT the Caribbean. The Bahamas are East Florida...and the T&C are South New York. In March you could take a shivering shellacking in either location. There, I said it. Not sure how recovered the BVI are from that Irma and Maria but they are the ‘training wheel’ locations for new bareboaters and have been doing this for a very long time. Caribbean temps, Caribbean people. Cultural diversity training.
