The Original O'DAY 22 design (1972-78) with the 1'11" deep fixed keel carried 600# of lead ballast inside the keel shell (keel is molded as part of hull with a very shallow bilge.) O'DAY mentioned that owners could add more ballast if they felt it was needed ut pouring lead shot into the keel shell through a small inspection/bailing hole in the cabin sole (floor), then pouring polyester or Epoxy resin in to fix the lead shot in place. Since the added ballast would b on top of the original ballast and so not very low in the water, it was really doubtful how much effect it had on stability, but I would think that if enough (maybe 50-100# +/) were added, it might help a "little" bit. Heavier boat would take longer to accelerate, but also maintain more momentum against waves. ODay recommended adding more foam flotation if ballast was added to keep boat afloat if it ever was holed, but I doubt many who added to ballast ever added to foam. I would think it would take a lot of wheel weights to make much difference in righting moment, and the steel clips will rust and make a mess in the bilge.
In 1979, O'DAY changed the 22 to a Keel/CB version, draft was now 1'3" cb up / 4'3" cb down, ballast increased to 700# to make up for less depth of keel. In 1980 the Sailplan was changed from the masthead design to the Fractional design, due to taller mast and greater sail area the ballast was increased to 800#. he Centerboard on the 1979-83 models was lightly ballasted, about 15# of lead flashing was installed inside the CB to make it easier to lower.
