fix keel

my 1972 O DAY 22 keel has water in it all the time is this normal and it also looks like previous
owner added those clips you would use for balancing you car tires what should I do

i can’t make sense of your post because you don’t specify what the wheel weights are used for and the problem with the water depends on where it is in relation to openings in the keel and whether it is an open area or if the wheel weights are chained to the keel through a couple of holes drilled in the thimble of the boat and no punctuation to make anything clear

I'd recommend some pictures posted would help. I'm a bit lost on why there are weights in a keel that has water? The keel is under the boat, in this case the O'Day 22 has what is called a stub keel with a centerboard that drops, very similar to my O'Day 25. to raise and lower your center board you should have a line, rope that is pulled up or let out.

I think what you are asking is that you see water in the bilge, which is accessed from the cabin by pulling up the wood floor board in the middle. If this is true then leaks in many areas can lead to water in the bilge. Starting with all the deck hardware and penetrations, the Chain plates, mast, portals, and rub rail. Even leaking bolt holes for the outboard mount and cracked centerboard guides and hull penetrations below the water line like for sink and toilet drains. Chances are given the age of the boat it is multiply sources and the best bet is to start rebedding them properly. I did my winter project by removing all my deck hardware, toe rails and rebedding them with butyl tape. That pretty much fixed my major issues I'm not planning to replace my rub rail as it is pretty chewed up anyway and that seems to be the last leak on the port side aft cabin area.

As was said, pictures would be very helpful.

The clips that you identify as wheel weights, may actually be some form of zinc that has been installed to prevent corrosion. When we see the pictures, we may have better responses to offer.

Please specify the distinction between bilge and keel. It isn't a problem having water in your keel, in and of itself, but it probably shouldn't be in your keel by design, so that could mean a problem. The bilge, is simply the lowest inside surface of the bottom of your boat. That isn't suppose to have water in it either, but it is very common in older boats. It can take a while to track down all the possible sources, including concentration. The weights you mentioned, are they in, on the keel or set down into the bilge? How much weight?

I think some people have tried to add weight to the centerboards on the Macgregor 26 classics for added ballast. Wheel weights don't add enough to matter.

The Original O'DAY 22 design (1972-78) with the 1'11" deep fixed keel carried 600# of lead ballast inside the keel shell (keel is molded as part of hull with a very shallow bilge.) O'DAY mentioned that owners could add more ballast if they felt it was needed ut pouring lead shot into the keel shell through a small inspection/bailing hole in the cabin sole (floor), then pouring polyester or Epoxy resin in to fix the lead shot in place. Since the added ballast would b on top of the original ballast and so not very low in the water, it was really doubtful how much effect it had on stability, but I would think that if enough (maybe 50-100# +/) were added, it might help a "little" bit. Heavier boat would take longer to accelerate, but also maintain more momentum against waves. ODay recommended adding more foam flotation if ballast was added to keep boat afloat if it ever was holed, but I doubt many who added to ballast ever added to foam. I would think it would take a lot of wheel weights to make much difference in righting moment, and the steel clips will rust and make a mess in the bilge.

In 1979, O'DAY changed the 22 to a Keel/CB version, draft was now 1'3" cb up / 4'3" cb down, ballast increased to 700# to make up for less depth of keel. In 1980 the Sailplan was changed from the masthead design to the Fractional design, due to taller mast and greater sail area the ballast was increased to 800#. he Centerboard on the 1979-83 models was lightly ballasted, about 15# of lead flashing was installed inside the CB to make it easier to lower.

A 5-gallon bucket of wheel weights is usually around 150-200#. I normally smelt them into stack-able 1lb rectangular bars or 3 lb triangular bars before using them for ballast
