My wife became aware of a boat for sale or disposal. Her friend, who works at the dump, was approached by a women who is a widow. Her husband had this boat and she is trying to dispose of it. I don't have many details but I will post an ad if after I look at it, I think it could be of interest. So stayed tuned. It may be a POS or a decent vessel which needs someone who can use it.

S,

Short story on 27 vs 30 footer.
My pal Jaimie & I co-owned a 22 Catalina for 4 years. Well, Jamie got married
& as a couple they wanted a larger boat. He bought a beautiful 27 Catalina.
Several months later, I decided I would also move up to a larger boat.
Sailing with Jamie on his boat, I thought of also getting a 27 footer.

When I mentioned this & size, his response was, "Hell NO, get a 30." When I asked why,
he pointed out that width, cabin interior space, beamier, larger cockpit,
longer waterline & more weight allowed for a smoother ride.
I ended up with a C30.

I'm not knocking a 27 footer, as boat size has alot to do with location, type of sailing
& comfort size you prefer. For me, I wanted to cruise & spelunk Florida to Texas & the Caribbean
& the larger size allowed for more options & comfort.
Always keep your options open.

Had the 27 and always wished that I had the much larger 30.

I love my 27 but you are right. When put next to a 30 in the next slip, she looked like the little sister to the 30

Yeah... we are waiting to hear whether it is a steal or a hopeless cause.
:plus: Rubbing down the goose bumps...although it could be just this crappy, cool, wet weather here in NY. Looking forward to your findings @shemandr . Good luck!

Skipper's right but I wasn't very clear in the OP. I've basically been asked to look at it and determine if it should go to salvage.

A math problem or a problem of the heart.. Sometimes one is more difficult than the other.

I don't envy you, I was asked to evaluate a boat for a couple trying to liquidate due to the husbands terminal illness. The boat had value when they put it on a custom roller trailer in Ventura, but after parking it in the desert for 20 years all I could tell them was "The trailer is worth a couple grand with new tires, the twin engine sportfisher with frozen rusted engines, not so much. Pity about the cats living in the boat."
I'd been led to believe the boat had "just come out of the water" .

Well I called the lady this AM. He son answered and he seems to be on top of it. So it's not the little old lady overwhelmed that was described to me. It has a Atomic Diesel (?) which doesn't run. I've seen the boat around here for years. It is 27' and it's an 1982. It's on Boattrader.com but I didn't copy the listing to this. I don't think we're supposed to do that. It's in a shipyard that I'll be at later today so I'll have a look see. Sounds like it's heading to the scrape pile. No trailer. Oh it has a Harken furler so that may be of interest to any of you Catalina 27 owners.

I believe Universal diesels were also known as Atomic in that vintage. Probably raw water cooled. Could have stopped running for any number of reasons ranging from easy fix to impractical to repair.
