We found one like that in about 60' of water well out from shore, in the lagoon on the western end of Fiji. Sitting perfectly upright, sails up, hatch open, no anchor.
It was obviously very recently sunk, yet we (the Fijians we were diving with and my family) never heard of folks being rescued or even calling for help. Customs and immigration knew nothing of the boat.
I was tied-up at the City Dock. There was a boat that just lost track of where it was and holed itself one beautiful Saturday afternoon in August. The Harbourmaster boat got a SOS over the radio; and, they scrambled and managed to help the crew to "step-up" into his boat before it sunk onto the rock(s).
They just jibed their new low profile hydrofoil J boat with the experimental 150% self-tacking Genoa. Don't worry, once she picks up speed again, she'll come out of the water again.
That a boat ran aground, all were rescued, boat being salvaged. Ok not funny.
But with out the context. A boat picture. The comments of sailors regarding the picture and filling the picture in contextually. Some of them were kind of funny.
Should we show sympathy for a boater who did not check his maps, appears the skipper was not knowledgeable of his surroundings, appearance is the skipper failed to maintain control of the boat in waters of adequate depth.
Empathy maybe sympathy not in my opinion. Has it happened before yes. Will it happen again likely. But we are all forewarned that sailing into unknown waters should not be taken lightly. A skipper is responsible for the safe passage of his boat.
