2000 Hunter 290 - Air Conditioning Draing Clogged

Hello, I just purchased a 2000 Hunter 290, I've inherited a couple of problems with it, I'm hoping they aren't major. The first one is that it has an AC, they just replaced what I believe is an pump under the floor. So when we turn on the AC now, it seems like the water coming out of the AC is backing up (not draining properly). I looked around a little bit, the broker's best idea was to shove basically a piece of standing rigging wire down the pipe to try to unclog it. But I know in a house you can sometimes just hold a hose to the outside drain for a few seconds and that can clear it up (seems much less invasive.) Anyway, I imagine/hope one of your guys has a magic home remedy. Thanks!

Why would you want to back-flow water up a drain potentially flooding the drip pan and getting electrical connections wet?

Just using it as an example of a simple way you can unclog the drain in your home, I'm not suggesting it for a boat. I don't think shoving a hard piece of wire down the drain is the best idea either. I really doubt draino is good for the environment. But I'm guessing someone has a trick they do, since I'm sure algae grows in there.

Is this the condensate backing up or the seawater that cools the compressor?

I would say the condensate, if I'm understanding you correctly. Basically if you run the AC for a little bit, the water that it is being pulled out the air in the cabin, that water runs out of the AC, but doesn't exit the boat anywhere, it just gets backed up in the tube under the floor.

I started looking at something like Barnacle Buster this morning https://www.amazon.com/Trac-Ecologi...id=1528209794&sr=8-1&keywords=barnacle+buster

I see there are various other systems also for circulating this through the lines for various amounts of money.

@kloudie1 yeah, I'm assuming a buildup of something bad in the line is the problem, I'll see if I can find where the thru-hull is and try @justsomeguys suggestion, maybe with my small air compressor. I like the idea of adding something like the "mermaid-condensator" but I imagine I need to clear the actual clog first. But that would be a good preventative measure for the future.

On all Hunters I have worked on the condensate drains into the bilge and get pumped out by the bilge pump. Perhaps the previous owner installed a condensate pump. I would detach the condensate line from the "pump", and them run a soft wire of just blow air to see if the line is blocked. If it is clear, I would run the A/C letting it drain into the bilge. If this all works the problem is the condensate pump. Perhaps the pump is wired to a switch that you have not turned on?

Thank you everyone, I appreciate all of your advice, this gives me plenty to get going with and I'll get back to you with the results.

the 2 big marine air conditioner manufacturers like Marine Airr Cruis air and Dometic have a tech support line. download your unit's install manual, figure out what parts are involved and call their tech support line.
