Odd boat noise

I've noticed an odd noise from a boat parked nearby. It's a nice seaworthy looking Cal 34. Normally no sound at all, it just sits quietly in it's slip. But whenever another sailboat goes out, this soulful moan can be heard. We went out to play in the breeze and to look at the grey whales today and it seemed to moan particularly loud.

Does anyone else feel bad for this poor boat?

I think John is feeling bad for not being out there with you. The groaning your hearing is all the way from Oregon of him moaning that he isn’t retired yet!!

Though I do understand that boats are not alive as we commonly use the term, I have always felt that boats have a personality and character. If you are in tune with a vessel, she will definitely make her needs known to you and it is best if you respond correctly.
Therefore, it is not beyond the realm of possibility that a boat may seem to long for a day out on the water, instead of sitting unloved and uncared for in her slip.
