I was talking on the phone with my daughter and she said her boyfriend is driving up to Flathead Lake to look at a sailboat they want to buy together. Is this a sign of commitment? I told her that she should seek advise from this group. There is none better anywhere!
They want a trailer able boat so they can sail Hebgen Lake primarily, but also Yellowstone Lake and Jackson Lake.

Well, Scott, there goes your boating budget. Time to start saving for that wedding.

What's their budget? Are they planning on staying overnight on it? What do they have to tow with? Bigger is better if it works for them. I'd go with a Mac26C (S or D) or the Hunter 26(0) if they can manage it.

The Mac 25 is also nice. It is not a water ballast boat though so you need a tow vehicle big enough... And my all-time favorite trailer sailboat for a couple is the Rhodes 22.

My oldest was born on a circumnavigation and sailed with me until she was 12. She did not continue sailing after that, which makes me a tiny bit sad. But hey, she's happy and you really can't say she didn't give sailing the old college try.

Yeah, my little girl wants to be a sailor! Her boyfriend seems pretty nice too, but Linda hasn't ever been in any rush on that front. They are looking at a Yankee Seahorse 24. A real oldie but looks like a sweet boat.

Well, bigger isn't always better. I pull with a jeep wrangle sport, 11"of water will float her on just about any boat ramp, she sleeps 4 in a pinch with a 7'6" cockpit. MORC certified too. Great and active association to go along with it. One class racing and a decent older model for about $3500. Mine was $1000 + $500 new mainsail and new bearings on the trailer.

Anyhow, very exciting. You must be looking forward to it too.

Boat is very similar to Yankee 26 and Yankee 28. It is not at all similar to the Yankee Dolphin 24 or the Yankee 30.

The Good: Heavy hand laid glass. Sails well, easy to rig. Lot's of neat design features for the time period. Big boat feel.

The Bad: Boat is a little smaller scale of the 26 and keeping as close to the fixed design as possible, the rudder pulls up from the bottom of the boat. Not a lot of fun if you forget to attach it well, or forget to unattach after pulling the boat from the water. Keel is also like the fin keel of the 26 cut to a stub and a center-board thrown in.

Love all Yankee sailboats and have owned the 28, Seahorse 24, and Dolphin 24 and sailed offshore many times on a 30. Seahorse was not my favorite boat, but a far better boat than a Catalina 22 and close to a Cal 25 of the same era.

Seems like a good idea for this relatively small investment in a boat. Not a good idea for a house.

My family doctor is coming to my house Sunday to observe/ help us drop the mast and move boat to the marina for the season. He was supposed to do all this last spring after he had told me he is planning to buy a Precision 23 ,same as mine. When I emailed him a date and time details last year for spring event, his reply included a picture of his daughter on her wedding day, " here's my boat this year".

I would like something, parts/info available. Which I bought this winter, at 81 yrs old.
Finishing a little "sorting out."
A good "auxiliary" engine helps. Sure u will have replace some, "stuff". I was unlucky, believed the prev. Owner was knowledgeable/honest. He missed on one. Which I don't know.
With that am pleased with A Catalina 18, althogh I paid a little extra, when U call Catalina. U can get info. On a 30+yr old boat, they dropped yrs ago. That is worth something!
Best of luck,
the green rdstrt.?

Be sure to get a prenup that covers the disposition of the boat.

Scott, I can relate to your experience. My daughter now 25, is getting married this summer to her boyfriend of 6 years. They went big with their first boat purchase!

@Scott T-Bird ,

As an 18 year old kid, I can say that it's every young sailor's dream to buy a boat and sail away to the Bahamas or something with their girlfriend! Granted, your daughter is more than likely older than me, but that's so awesome that her and her boyfriend are thinking of taking on that opportunity! My girlfriend and I (almost been together for a year now) have bonded a whole lot on the water, and she enjoys racing just as well as cruising! A girl who's willing to explore her boyfriend's world is something really special! :)

I think some of you are mistaken. There hasn't been any talk of marriage, and I'm not anticipating it. I was just happy that they are going to enjoy sailing this summer! It seems that they now have a boat. I'm waiting to hear details ...
Still, we are talking a commitment as big as marriage and potentially as messy if it doesn't work out. :poke:
Granted, your daughter is more than likely older than me, but
What are you trying to say, Simon? I mean, might you want to rephrase that or are you going to let Scott make of it what he will? :stir:.
