What's the Lock for on Jabsco Toilet?

This is probably a dumb question, but on the standard lock/twist model of the manual Jabsco toilet, what is the twist feature for?

It shows a lock and an unlock. What am I unlocking?

From the Xylem website, form 2008:
"
The new ‘Twist ‘n' Lock' manual toilet system launched by Jabsco at METS found favour with the Judges who awarded the innovation a ‘Special Mention' in the ‘Interior Equipment' Category.

This simple, easy to use, development ensures that even on a poorly installed toilet system, water and waste cannot backflow out of the bowl. The design uses a remodelled piston in the pump-out assembly. At the end of normal pumping out, at the bottom of the pump stroke, the user simply turns the handle through 90o which locks the piston down onto the base outlet valve, keeping it securely shut. Turning the handle to the normal operating position opens the lock again."

I can't locate my owners manual- must be on the boat. I do believe that valve is actually an inlet valve to the pump, from the bowl. The piston rod holds the INPUT valve closed so stuff does not back up into the bowl. It works in concert with the joker valve. Personally, I don't think it works that well.

It locks the piston in the down position, and a central 'rod' below the piston seal presses/holds the bowl outlet flapper valve pressed against its seal. In operation this only seals when the pressure of a pump down-stroke pushes waste out the joker. If un-pressurized waste flows backwards on the old setup, the lack of adequate pressure lets it by the flapper and into the bowl. You can see the rod in the cut-away pump.

You have it backwards...it keeps back flow (waste left in the toilet discharge line because it's either way too long, runs uphill, insufficient pumping or all of the above) from getting back INTO the bowl.
I wouldn't want to be the person who leans over the toilet to flush it and unlocks it when combined with a blocked tank vent that's caused the system to become pressurized.

Peggie, that was a cut and paste from the xylem web site but after re-reading reading it you're absolutely right. Also, thank you for the mental image conjured up by your last sentence. I'm still giggling.

Doesn't work.
To the guys who say it does not work, is that based on the opinion that the design is flawed, or observation that it fails in real life? Just curious, I’ve never had backflow.

I know the lock prevents sea water back flow. It is not just the piston filling from a leaking joker valve, but also the "check valves" that allow the Up and Down pumping action to work.
Smart addition for those who don't want a failure of the head mechanism.

Tip: Don't change your joker, O-Rings, check valves just buy this instead.

About $20 more, single change out, less mess.

Your wife will love the Raritan PH SuperFlush (also available as a "conversion" that allows you to keep your existing bowl, seat and lid) Raritan PH SuperFlush has a re-designed base that has the same mounting bolt pattern as your Jabsco, but uses the PHII pump that's been the top rated manual toilet for more than30 years. The sbo.com online store can get it for you...give Dave a call for price.

If you buy the pump assembly you still have to buy the choker valve. The rebuild kit includes it. FYI.
