on an ore boat, up crossing lake superior in light haze ( dense fog ). a snowy owl found us. first it circled the ship. we are used to seagulls, it was white, but much different shape. it landed on deck and never moved evan when we walked by at say 5'. we went through the soo locks and the st. mary's river system at night. it still never moved. the next day while down bound on huron it still was motionless. the crew watched but left it alone. sometime the next night around detroit it left us. we all guessed it was just total exhaustion and needed a rest.

the great lakes are a big flyway as you prolly know. hawks, water fowl, loons at night sound spooky. bats in huge flocks. may flys in clouds miles long, flying ants that look like smoke from wild fires. and the biting flys.

]I thought this was going to be another one of those cannabis threads.[/QUOTE]

well, yesterday was BEER day so i figured that meant sea stories would be appropriate. way better than 'how to fix my broken toys' threads.

Hemp ropes were on one of the first boats I ever owned. It doesn't like getting wet much, they used to tar it in that case. Just for chuckles, here's an image of the first page from my old 1941 Knights Modern Seamanship on rope...

Boeing pressurization testing required emergency descent procedures to a 1,500 foot simulated landing. Because it required a speed waiver we we're approved for a specific location over the ocean. The fishing fleet saw a 777 screaming down toward them from out of sight altitude multiple times. I wonder what the fishermen thought. I think that one was around 2008 if I remember correctly. At least it's a fun ride.

Snowy Owls will hang out on the ground - preferably a beach. I'm not sure but they may even nest there.
Why should they move? They aren't scared of you. You are a guest on their ride South. They could navigate but won't. Won't stand watch either. But will crap on the deck. Not the best crew.

Merit 22- Oregon lakes
Summer of 2016 the wife and I were on a local lake mid summer. ghosting along just kicking back, soaking up the sun, when I hear the familiar sound of a bi-plane coming towards the lake. I holler at Jen, who was down below, and we both wave at him and give thumbs up as he dives down towards us, blows smoke, does a full loop and barrel roll right above the lake and maybe a hundred yards away from us. We were both so blown away at the private show that neither of us had presents of mind to grab a camera, and have regretted the oversight ever since. I don't see any photos from jon, so I'm guessing he had similar brain freeze. ;) . those once in a lifetime events are very special, and hard to come by.

Martin State Airport is the base for Blue Angels when thet are in Baltimore. On show day, I anchor off the end of the runway with about 20- some boats around. When they come out about 100, 150 ft. overhead it is incredibly loud and impressive. Big thrill for us and the grandchildren!

I was head coach for our counties Special Olympic's team for 8 years. The state track and field meet is held at Ft. Leonard Wood each year and the Army pulls out all of the stops for opening ceremonies. After the opening grand entrance, about 1000 athletes are lined up on the field. Out of the darkness comes 3 Phantom jets at tree top level. When they reached the field they hit the afterburners and shoot straight up into the air into the darkness. We spent the next 2 hours cleaning crap out of pants.

Remember seeing the first time a shuttle was piggybacked. I believe it was a non working one that circled Baltimore and D.C. . Stepped out in the balcony of my first apt. And there it was!

Been on both ends

The most impressive buzzing I ever experienced was an F-111 buzzing us as we flew along about 500'AGL they were below us with about 500' of horizontal separation. Quite a bit faster than our 110 or so knots. The 111 has a unique feature in that the fuel dump is just above the exhaust cans so that is the crew dumps fuel and lights the after burners at the same time you get quite a display.
