Kinda fun what you can do with apps these days.

I was in San Fran yesterday for a meeting and walked the Embarcadero before it started. Out on Pier 7 I watched a container ship leaving the bay, and casually wondered where it was going.
Wait, I can figure that out! Lots of boats in the bay, so first lets make sure we're looking at the right one.
OK, CompassEye tells me the target is at 330M.

Now to iSailor, for which I have tides, weather, and AIS.

Found a boat on that bearing line, working against the flood. 338T sounds right, and it's over two miles away for sure. So that's it. Now look at the AIS data.

That's it, the Hapaug-Lloyd Tokyo Express. Bound for Long Beach. Now to that meeting!

I've done the same but with fleetmon to see the AIS data. Good call using the compass and bearing in isailor to cut through the traffic.

Yes always good to have a 2nd conformation on observations. I find bearings via a bearing compass perfect for that. That’s why I love that app for when I don’t have my glass.

Nice job Sheldon. Next episode is Amy going to join you??
Yea I’m a sucker for a good app.

Like CompassEye. Anyone else have a great non-Nav app that they use?

Not as exciting as your examples, but I do use Google Sheets extensively as a logbook and to hold things like measurements, part numbers, and recurring maintenance lists.

Downloaded CompassEye and played with it this past weekend. Worked really good, I didn't notice the top right corner giving me location and speed, maybe that is a setting?

iPhone or iPad? An non-cellular iPad will not show that.

I have an Android phone, not sure it these are on iPhone or not...
A fun one is SailGrib WR for wind prediction and weather routing if you have the polars for your boat. It comes with polars for a lot of different boats but it seems to be Euro-centric.
SailDroid has some good tools for using the GPS in your phone/tablet, like SOG, COG, Distance to WP, Course to WP, GPS reception.
Sky Map is fun for looking up at night. You hold the phone up and it shows you stars by name and constellations.
GPS Essentials has some good tools, including a compass overlay on your camera like Jackdaw showed above.
