After years we finally have the Endeavour in the water. The boat came with a Raymarine ST4000+ MKII autopilot. Never knew if it worked or not for sure. Worked fine yesterday for a while in Charlotte Harbor heading south. Then it didn't as the drive belt was old and rotted and started falling apart. I got it apart last night on anchorage and found the problem, the belt.

We hope to be in Marathon by this time next week and I'm looking to see if anyone is there that I could have a belt sent to. I can use the USP Store but would prefer not to due to their daily charge.

West Marine there is trying to locate a belt and have it sent to them but the guy on the phone wasn't very helpful so don't know how that is going to work out. I can find one on ebay and might order it regardless.

So anyone there at Boot Key Harbor or at an address that I could have a belt shipped to?

We will anchor just off Ft. Myers Beach tonight and hopefully Marco Island tomorrow for the weekend. It sure is great having the boat in the water and so far everything, other than the autopilot is working fine. We had a great sail yesterday down the length of Charlotte Harbor to the ICW where we then started motoring south and anchored just off the west shore of Pine Island for the night.

Thanks for any help,

Sumner

Sumner, I was thinking of this just yesterday, as we are within 2 weeks of casting off, and may be ordering things while underway. On a delivery in December, I had a part shipped to a marina along our route. I called in advance, and explained that we would only be taking on fuel, and they were ok hanging onto a package for us.

Does the US Postal Service still have general delivery? Even for companies that require a street address to ship something, you could give them the physical street address of the post office and still use general delivery and your name.

We are just 10 days to two weeks behind you, and if our paths cross I would love to buy you a beer. We will head south from Tampa, with an eventual stop in Marathon (KW does not interest us) or Key Largo before making longer-range plans (Bahamas vs. Chesapeake).

Update...Thanks guys. Defender has the belt and 3-4 day shipping so I'll order it at Marco and have it sent to the UPS Store in Marathon. Should work.

SF would like to meet up with you or any others on here. If the boat is still working fine we will probably be in Marathon 4-5 days (anchored on Gulf side) and then weather permitting leave there for the Bahamas. Plan on sailing directly from Marathon past South Riding Rock and check in at Morgans Bluff at the north end of Andros,

You can have it delivered to Marathon City Marina. They operate the moorings inside the harbor and handle packages.

As for the autopilot, this boat had an st4000 come with it. It is not rated for this heavy of a boat but it would work in protected waters as long as I wasn't pushing the boat hard. It really struggled with wavy conditions. If I remember right, it was rated for up to 12,000 lbs. Mine is 16,400 off the shelf and now about 20,000 loaded down.

My belt also broke and I replaced it about a year after I got the boat back in 2005. Not long later the plastic housing that bolts to the wheel started breaking apart. The sun weakened the plastic over the years (10). I ended up replacing it with a new autopilot system that used the type 1 rotary drive that mounts to a sprocket on the back end of the steering shaft via chain. It is much stronger system and handled the waves much better but it would still get overpowered in gusty conditions.

6 years later I balanced my rudder and now the boat is so easy to steer that even the old wheel pilot would work (if the sun didn't destroy it).

Summary: lbs is not a good indicator of how powerful of an autopilot you need but I guess the best measuring stick they have. In my opinion though, the wheel pilots are not reliable due to the plastic housing they use.

We won't be staying at the city marina so that is out as they won't take packages unless you are paying to stay there. At least that is what I've heard. I'll use the UPS Store.

Thanks for the suggestion and I agree that the ST 4000+ is at its limits with this size boats and will only use it in favorable conditions. The belt never broke but disintegrated. I have the newer 4000 MKII and it looks like they did fix some of the problems of the earlier ones with all the wheels according to what I can find on the internet.

Anchored outside of Ft. Myers Beach between the entrance and the Sanibel bridge right now. Will leave early for Marco Island,

I have had packages delivered to US post offices as general delivery and they will hold it for you. Only requirement is it must be sent to the post office via US mail, not UPS or others.

City Marina really isn't a Marina. Well, they do have a dock you can side tie to, but their main income is mooring balls and considering this time of year, I doubt there will be any anchoring spots left open inside the harbor. In fact, it is hard to find any in the summer too. It is mostly a mooring field.

Hello Sumner, I'm glad to hear of your Charlotte Harbor, Pine Island, and Ft Myers area adventures. Those locations bring back many fond memories of our time in Florida. Always a pleasure to read your posts! Best Wishes for your travels.

Yep stayed there once on a ball for a week when we rented a car and drove back over to Ft. Myers Beach to look at the Endeavour when it was for sail. We were in the Mac and had been anchored about a quarter mile from her about a month earlier.

Not planning on staying there this trip. Will stay on the Gulf side until we are ready to make the crossing to the Bahamas. Anyone know of a place to get water on the Gulf Side?

Sumner

P.S. Thanks Phil, hope the north is treating you well and once again the pictures you took for me were invaluable in making parts 2200 miles from the boat....:)
