Hey All,
Tomorrow is the start of my 56th year on Earth and I'm asking for a welder for my 55th Birthday. I've been fascinated by this welder that runs on water, no special gases to buy. It is suppose to work with most metals, including S.S. and aluminum.http://www.multiplaz.com/about
Does anyone have experience with this machine? It looks really awesome.
There are two heads, one cuts, the other welds.
I went to use it to make a bow pulpit and transom arch out of aluminium.

Looks like an awesome welder, bonding dissimilar metals and all. I know nothing about welding other than “I gotta guy” down the street. Just thought I would wish you a Happy Birthday old man!

Will like all tools you will need to buy a couple as you play with different metals.

Often you start with a stick welder connecting mild steel to mild steel. Or rebar into various shapes.

Next in the process and cost is the TIG welder.

Then you can step up to the MIG welder.

Each time it’s more skill and money needed. Of course you’ll be able to weld more interesting metals. Then you’ll need the grinder and polishing equipment.

Oh boy are you in for fun.

It is Plasma arc welding. It's a little tricky. If you are going to weld your own rails I recommend Stainless as it is easier to weld then aluminum especially anodized. TIG welding stainless is fairly simple. I used a microplasma system at a FAA repair station. Not exactly a system for the DIY.

First off, thank you, BlowMeAway for the birthday well wishing.
And, jssailem and sailnoproblem, thanks for the info. I welded a little in junior high shop class, spot welding and basic rod welding. I've done a small amount since, never TIG or MIG welding. Certainly not plasma. However, I do tend to jump into those things with the thought, this is what I'm going to do so I might as well start in the deep end. That's how I learned to swim, by the way. While my mother was teaching my older brother how to swim in the shallow end, I walked to the deep end and jumped in, apparently swimming wasn't really all that hard after all.
And lastly, BrianRobin, could you elaborate? Does the Multiplaz not work as advertised or is it just more expensive than it's worth? As a proponent of progressive technology, it has a huge cool factor for me, but I don't have money to throw away.

Actually, I could have a guy, I just like making things myself. I'm particular to the extreme, my ideas tend towards the, shall we say, "unconventional" and other tradesmen seem to have a hard time doing things my way.
My wife's worst nightmare is hiring someone to do a project I've designed. Her second worst nightmare is letting me do it.

Will, tests on the Multiplaz, show terrible results on welding anything other then copper, so bad none have past any bend tests thus far. Welds are porosity filled, with little or no fusion. I'm surprised Vince ,the Shamwow guy isn't selling it on TV, with a buy one get another free deal!, it's just that kind of product.

Happy Birthday Will. Hope you get a welder for your birthday. I have had a simple Miller 110 volt mig welder for 15 years now and don't know how people who don't have a welder are able to survive! I don't weld everyday and I am far from really good but I fix what breaks and make what I want. I have modified our trailer to have a extending tongue, built 4 kayak trailers that are a modular type of my own design that carry 1,2,3, 4, 5, 6, or kayaks and 2 sup's. Cindy comes up with projects for me to make for her and her friends. I would like to upgrade to a larger unit with more power but this one just keeps going.
One nice thing about a 110 volt unit is that I made a generator mount for the front of my Wheel Horse. I have a 5500 watt gen head on it that runs off the PTO on the tractor. My welder will run off that. Had a local farmer come get me to fix a broken steering link out in the field before a storm hit. I drove my Wheel Horse there and fixed it, he got out of the field before the storm hit but I sure got soaked before I got back to the garage.
Get you a welder and have at it. Definitely spend the cash for an good auto darkening helmet. They make newbie like me almost look like he has a clue of what he is doing!

I didn’t power up any of my welders on this project for @jssailem but did use 23ga pin nailer, shaper, table saw, chop saw, sander, air compressor, and tried and failed with the airbrush (gelcoat too thick). Despite what my wife says one can never have too many tools.

My eldest son asked for a welder for his 15th birthday. He then spent several weeks teaching himself to weld with scrap metal pieces and pipe. Once he thought he had it down he began welding replacement patch panels into the VW bug he bought off Craigslist.

It started out rough, but by the end of the project his welds were pretty nice. It turned out like this.

Last summer he let me borrow it, and with both boy's help, we replaced the rusted out rear end in my 2004 Sprinter work truck with a chunk cut from a donor vehicle.
